A photo essay - how to run a hydro store

there are so many hydro shops around here now that you can almost name your price at some places. everywhere gives at least a 10% medical discount. if you're accomplished and know what you're talking about, giving the guys that work at the shop tips and suggesting new products that become popular will get you a bigger discount even. i've gotten up to like 30% off certain big purchases in that past. but 15-20% is the usual discount.

Darc- The difference between Grandma's molasses and good Blackstrap molasses should be considered. I had used Grandma's or Publix brand, but for less money I get more Blackstrap, not to mention more minerals and vitamins.

I find there is a vast difference when looking at them comparatively, since Blackstrap has about 4-5x the amount of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. I also get better action in under the microscope via ACT. Not to mention I can still use my organic Blackstrap(in comparison to feed molasses) as an organic vitamin supplement @$4.40/18oz.

Back to the topic, I feel bad for all the people who shop at hydro stores and absolutely hate, when they try offering me all these things i don't need, nor want.

15-20% off of 30-40% OVER RETAIL is still getting porked up the ass though.

Awesome thread.

I'm all for saving money.. and I can't stand when I feel like I'm getting ripped off.. but...

Any business that has a real brick and mortar store has to mark up products to pay off rent, utilities, inventory, labor overhead costs.. Unless your talking about Walmart you can expect that the product is marked up 40-50% . At restaurants a chef makes the decisions for pricing food based on the food cost to them.. standard is over three times the cost of food. 30% of the menu costs they pay.

I'm not trying to disagree with you about it sucking to pay profit to a store owner.. but He often times isn't making near what you think.

I've been researching vendors and store owners lately.. all though the business is booming for some store owners.. the mark up has been restructured recently with much less for the owners to bite on.

From my understanding there are plenty of things in the store that an owner will cringe hard if you get a discount on.. say for instance inline fans, electronic ballasts have a small mark up.

I could be wrong and the info I have been researching could be off.. But I just wanted to throw out another perspective.. As a well informed Hydro store is can at times be the best place to get real straight forward info instead of online.

Many of the stores around here use bulbs as their price loss-leader. With the days of easy credit cards coming to and abrupt stop 2 years ago, their business has dropped off bit time on the high-ticket items particularly the plug & play hydro set-ups.

15 - 20% discounts are standard. Way too many stores - over 20. Insane.

the hydro store is not a viable retail biz by any normal standard.

the point of this thread is to educate consumers.

Fuck!
Guys I actually have something relevant and useful to post.

I also used grandmas for a long time but now use "Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Molasses".

Out of all the brands in my research it was one of the best..frankly gmas isn't real good.

15% iron
8% mag
20% potassium
10% calcium
4% garbs
10% vitamin b6

SODIUM = 0%

This is the label obviously % are a % of daily value..but potassium for example is 730 mg compared to others that's alot. Calcium 115 mg....if you google it you will find a link that list all the brands and specs....this stuff I think is pretty damn good. Bought it online. Haven't ever seen it mentioned before so I feel like I might be on to something lol, I feel realize there are likely alot of people that know about it..but wanted to mentioned it in case I am wrong and someone can straighten me out, or maybe it will help someone...or maybe I am just on the bleeding edge lol and no one has heard of it..probably not.

If you are on the bleeding edge, then I am hanging off the side yelling for a rope!! Lol!! They sell the wholesome sweetners at my local store, been using it since grandmas is always sold out at the walmart down the street!
