Aquaponic Chronic

I've seen a 8 foot cherry tomato plant that was in an flood tray that was fed by a 1,000 gallon pond. It put out a ton of tomatoes.

Aquaponics works well for cannabis, perpetual gardening style. Made for a very maintenance free 100 gallon tank of s.a. Cichlids stocked about 3inches of fish per gal, used limestone rocks to help control the ph. Plenty of n-p-k for buds.

I have a fun little experiment going on with aquaponics right now. I am using a 3 gal critter carrier for the tank and a 12 qt sterilite tub for the grow bed. I did most of my research on backyard aquaponics but I did not find much on smaller scale grows. I have been active in the micro section for awhile and the micro grows fulfill my needs. I am using tropical fish (endlers) for my grow and it seems to be working just fine. I started flowering on april 20th under a 42w cfl. I am growing vertically up and around the bulb and plan on using a 70w hps on future runs as soon as I get it dialed in. I have 4 fish in it now and have added two nightcrawlers to the grow bed. My nitrates have just started falling and I plan on tossing a couple more fish in it after it reaches zero. I also have other tanks I can use for nitrate and water top-offs and a fresh supply of live fish.

There will be a ebb and flow table that is controlled by an over flow siphon. The "table" will be separate from the fish tank and have the veggies in it. I think you brought up a good point, the plants will need to be established first before adding fish.

I guess I'll have to do more research on growing tomatoes in aquaponics. They also seem to be heavy feeders.

I think my family member said that the fish would go in first, and there shit would cause a jump in nitrates that would be unsuitable for the plants. But having some common pond lily's would help stabilize the water and make it possible for the plants to survive. This is really an experiment we are doing and neither of us have experience. Just have read enough information to know how the system works. When things are up and running I'll take some photos and post them probably over in the gardening section.
I believe you will need to get the system setup with fish before adding in the plants. The tank will need to "cycle" before it starts to produce plant food. Most fish stores will carry a "freshwater master test kit" which can help in knowing if the system has cycled. Starting off with a small amount of fish works best to get the bacteria started. The first bacteria will change ammonia(fish poop) into nitrites. Both ammonia and nitrites are harmful to fish in high amounts. After you have nitrites in the system another bacteria starts changing nitrites into nitrates which are almost harmless to fish and that is what the plants will eat. Starting with a small amount of fish helps keep the ammonia and nitrites from spiking to hard while the system is setting up. Once ammonia and nitrites are back at zero you can add in more fish. Plants can be added after nitrates are present in the system.

yea posted a thread askin bout this a few months ago.. my bro told me about it and i couldnt find too much.. he grows his veggies with it and wanted to try buds... sounds space consuming...wont work in my 1br lol

wont work in my 1br lol
??? Mine is setup in a small cabinet. I want to make a 10 gallon fish tank stand with a micro setup in it. Just pump the water up into the tank from the grow bed in the stand and let it overflow back down again through some pipes. Completely stealth and concealed.

I wouldn't run aquaponics indoors unless it was a micro aquarium style grow. I am working towards a full outdoor setup right now though using 55 gallon drums. I have 3 drums, one will be for the adult tilapia / duckweed , one will be for the babies / duckweed and one will be for duckweed alone.

I want to do a leveled system

On top would be rabbits
in the middle will be chickens laying nest areas
bottom will have the tilapia tanks and the chickens "run" area.

Some of the rabbit poo will end up in the tilapia and chicken areas which is actually a good thing assuming there isn't too much falling into the tilapia tanks BUT I will play that by ear as this is a first for me.

I then will have my worm bins in with the chickens area and can give them to all the animals as treats as well as make ewc from the compost all these animals will end up creating.

In my head it sounds great, putting it into working order however keeps me in the "planning stage" lol.

There are some sweet design ideas like this one here

never heard of using rabbit turds in it. I like the drawing though, you can tell the one rabbit is giving it a good push.

Love the rabbit pooping.

Many Lagomorphs, including rabbits, eat their poop. They can tell the difference between the poop they eat and the poop they do not want.

That is because they eat grass and cellulose is hard to digest.

I do not know how their digestive system would be affected if they could not eat their good poop. I don't know how a commercial rabbit food would effect their poop.

Food for thought.
If they do not work out you can have some delicious Hossenfeffer stew.

I was reading on backyard aquaponics that one guy was tossing in a little urea instead of using fish. He did it regularly so as to build up the bacteria and keep it cycling. Makes me wonder if bunnyponics has been coined yet?

there a cat that is a Aquaponic master, he grows the sickest fish power'd tweeds youll ever see... his bubba are off the hook ... he use's other types of plants during veg and flower to regulate food regimens , ie in veg he runs plants that dont need a lot of N , during flower he puts in leafy greens the eat most of the N during flowering and leave mostly P K , ect ,

im sure there will be a BIG future in Aquaponics for all types of plants

I asked a few questions here and I have initiated an program.
I have two 100 gallon stock tanks set up in the shade in my yard. The wife got use a fat mess of guppies and a couple of pairs of swordtails.
My water has gone to an acceptable p.h. now and I don't feel the need for p.h. down anymore. The guppies keep the water very clean and they multiply like crazy.
This water is primarily for the canna crop but it goes to the mater's and bean too.
I'll post up any negitive findings if there are any but for the past month,Guppy water rocks.
I do have a long flowering sativa finishing now and I am flushing with spring water instead of guppy water but the romulan beside it is getting tested with guppy water thru finish.
Next year if we survive 2012...I'm having more guppy tanks.Prolly 400 gallons more.:shark:

Hey all thanks for keeping the thread going. Things are busy on the home front . Ill have to read through the posts to see what's going on. Going to take picture in the next few days.
Glad to see people are interested in aquaponics.

Where is the link about aquaponic secrets as a source of income?

Check this out, I'll check back to explain when I have more time.

Water not quite ready. Some goldfish and lettuce sprouts are in the system.
