Black Widow Grow Diary

Wicked OG bro! What size bags are those? Also which coco are you using? I run the canadian express coco (not to be confused with canadian express which is also coco based). They throw trichodermia in there and the roots go crazy! Its cheap too Switched on have it for $22 for 40 liters!

Well this is looking awesome man! Will be nice to see some nice BW buds. Im running Dinafem White Widow at the moment, and she's actually not bad for free seeds!

10litre bags x18

Needed 200L of coco so went with the compressed bricks. Worth the extra hassle imo. Also threw some pumice in there for good measure.

The bricks are $16NZD for a 5kg(11lb) block that expands to 50 litres(13gal).

I've got a big crush on the widow. Going to grow them all haha

Looking good! I'll be watching intently as BW is one I have wanted to try for a long time. Also, I heard that BW is the closet to the original Widow you can get, is this true?

I would love to have more info on your diy emitter irrigation system Overgrowingkiwi. Looks real cool and something I am in dire need of. Can you use it with plain Promix?

Thanks in advance and good luck. You will have some tasty nuggs if it's anything like what I tried in the past.

Thanks for chiming in guys.

Heres a diagram of the irrigation system made from 13mm flexi tube & 8mm flexi & firm tube.

The rings are hard poly tube and the rest of the smaller stuff is flexi.

I guess you could use it with any medium. Would just need to tweak the watering intervals depending on the moisture retention of your medium.

Theres a lot of speculation on the net about the origin of the widow. I think it's fair to say this is one of the better releases.
Anything sold under the name has gotta be good imo.

About 10 days in. Pulled 3 males. 15 females remain.
They haven't had a chance to fully dry out yet so are looking a little overwatered. I promise they will pick up soon :) Started them off on 1/2 strength H&G CoCo nutrients.

Don't let them dry out OG Bro.

Im no coco expert but Ive found that they do their best if they are constantly wet (not saturated mind you) and everything I've read says to keep it moist.

Plants are looking good though. It's nice to see some good strains coming into our neck of the woods, too much shit in NZ getting passed off as good weed!

Your'e right about keeping the coco moist kronical. Research has also led me to keep it moist.

I did however give them a little starve towards the start, with the intention of getting the roots to explore outward. I'm glad I didn't give these ladies any vege time as their flowering stretch has given them more than enough height.

Heres a macro of the shortest south indian of the phenotypes I've got. a majority look more to the brazilian sativa side.

Kiwi, thanks for the update.

I found most of my BW tend towards the Indica side too. Only one would I immediately jump to the conclusion its a Sativa. I can't wait to flower her.

If you dont mind a bit of advice, your ladies are looking a bit yellow. It looks like you need to give them a N boost, or you'll be in for a severe N deficiency soon. My BW have much darker fan leaves right now. It could be where you didn't have the coco moist. Moisture stress will cause N deficiency very quickly.

I do believe your holding back food at the beginning attributed to the N def as well. I know it may seem like it makes sense that roots would search out nutrients when slightly deprived of food, but its really counter intuitive. Roots require nutrients to grow, and will quickly deplete nutrient levels of media they're in contact with without continuous fertigation. So if you with-hold nutrients, root growth will be increasingly hindered as the levels of nutrients decrease, as will above ground growth as a result.

Best of the luck from here on out. Im not too far ahead of your ladies. If they turn out amazing, Ill be sure to let you know. :)

Thanks for the advice! You just read my plants perfectly. My previous experience with continuous flow hydroponics made me over cautious with the nutrient strength this time around. I'm usually trying to avoid burning the ladies.

I fed them their first full strength dose of house & garden coco formula plus the multi enzyme the night before pictures were taken so expecting to see some chlorophyll production over the coming days. Hopefully I got there in the nick of time and havent stunted them.

From my experience the plants remove energy(ATP) from the lower/damaged leaves to increase root production when the medium/solution is weak but I could be wrong.

Suggestions always appreciated.

Next up! transplanting 12 female BW clones into NFT. Stay Tuned.

Thanks for taking the suggestions so kindly. Ive learned alot during my time growing, and Im more than glad to share what Ive learned with others as long as they're receptive . Sometimes you run into really stubborn people and it makes you question why you bother even helping.

Im unsure of the nutrient profile you are using, but In your shoes I would feed at a nutrient strength of 200-250 ppm N if hand watering. This will help your leaves hang on awhile longer, but the affected leaves wont return to their darker green though.

I like to get my nutrient solutions tested, so I know what Im actually feeding them. Id suggest you do this as well.

W/ regards to lower leaves being consumed by the plant when nutrients are low, the nutrients are typically going to be translocated to the newest growth. Apical dominance comes into play here.

Now I have read that leaves closer to the roots, help supply the roots with what they need. Seems logical to me, so keeping lower leaves healthy longer would lead to better root growth.

Of course it all comes down to the roots. Keep them healthy, and you'll be well rewarded.

Kiwi, this lady is the color you're looking for. I love deep dark green fan leaves like this. She's one month in, and Im hoping I can maintain that color for at least another month. It isn't easy though. I take better care of my plants than myself..lol.

The time has come to put the best of my 2nd batch of BW clones into NFT gullys. They will be under 800w of HPS enclosed in those cool looking cool tubes. 12 BW girls transplanted. We now have two BW grows 4 weeks apart. It's CoCo Vs NFT time hehe.
