I opened a 5KG brick/bag of botanicaires coco gro
wet it down and the runoff is over 600ppms
I thought this stuff was already prewashed, aged and ready to go?

i put 5 gallons of coco into my straining/wash bucket.
ran about 20 gallons of water thru it and squeezed water from the coco and now are @ 90ppm,
water is 70ppm
i'm new to coco so maybe I'm spose to wash it a few times before using regardless?

If it was in a brick I would always rinse beforehand as yes the salts can be rather high at times. While your at it run a couple gallons cal/mag through there ph'ed of course. PEACE!

I use the bonticare 5kg bricks all the time with no pre rinse with great success.

5.5 gallons of tap water 5.8ph with nutes to expand the Block in a plastic tote.

Simply put the dry block in the tote and add the 5.5gal of water and come back later when the block has absorbed all the water and it breaks up easily by hand. I like to add perlite also.

Sometimes I won't pre-rinse but I will make sure I get a good bit of run off on the initial watering/feeding

better safe than sorry JH
I'm was going to check runoff anyways but was surprised at how hi the ppms were.
maybe mine was the exception.
I have 2 more 5kg bricks and i'll be checking those

I've probably bought 20 bonticare 5kg bricks in the last 2 years and I've never rinsed.

I got some sunleaves brand one time and even rinsed it (not enough) and saw all kinds of problems with it.....plants had to be trashed.

But Bonticare is pre rinsed.

There was a very noticable difference in results.

most info on this site is pre-rinse your coco that ive ever read. figured it was normal procedure and working well. the 5 kg bot bricks fill up a 18 gal rubbermaid tote nicely. amazing how much there really is.

What he said.

I use 7 5kg bricks per run, and I just soak them in Lucas + 10mL CalMag.

Never a problem (but I've never tested the runoff, either).

Botanicare bricks were not available around here for a while, so I had to rinse. It isn't much extra work, so I still do it now that botanicare is available.

Every coco I've used including Botanicare brick had a bit of brown run off when I rinsed it.

put it in a tub
add a bunch of tap/hose water, let it absorb
break it up
put it in pots (I use superroots airpots)
rinse for a bit with tap
wait until pot stops draining, run lucas and cal mag through it
profit

its easy to rinse,
I have a 5 gall bucket with bunches of 3/8" holes drilled into the bottom.
I'm new to coco and the 1st stuff i bought locally was pretty bad stuff,
had to let it soak a few days and rinse quite a bit
the bot.5kg bricks were the same cost, but had to pay shippping
anyways I ran about 15 gallons thru 5 gallons of the botanicaire stuff and it rinsed out quick.
I saved some of the iniitial 500ppm runoff and watered a few 2wk old seedlings and they were fine.
its better just to be safe and do a runoff check and have to do a 10minute rinse rather than
spend the time and resources once and be sorry

The better brands of coco, including botanicare bags and bricks, are pre-charged with nutes to avoid the common initial deficiencies of cal and mag. Flushing the coco just means that you have to recharge it yourself.

Actually I read that the ready mixed bags are pre charged and the bricks are not...

I think a lot of us take it for granite that better coco is pre rinsed but, probably a good idea to test the ppm etc befoe using...

Naw, look closely at the label...the brick is precharged too.

ultimately its on the grower all the time to know what they are dealing with. and information varies for products widely. I prefer to do my own prerinse and charge it with my known use of nutes. less mistakes if i start from 1st base.^^^^FH

Someone call botanicare and verify the pre-charged with bricks or not. Also ask what it's pre-charged with.

thanks

it says nothing on the 5kg brick about being precharged.
the only reference having added anything
or rinsed is the wording
*flushed of excess sodium*

I take that as meaning its not completely flushed of sodium.
only the *excess sodium* is flushed
as per botanacaires definition of *excess*

regardless firehound belows sums it up for me

Botanicare had a bad batch of coco not to long ago. There was a drought in Sir Lanka last year which left alot of salt in the raw product. I am sure they have run through the bad coco but I am also sure there is still some salty botanicare coco sitting in hydro shops somewhere. Botanicare is also using a coarser pith now.
