How long after getting hired can i get drug tested?

I just got hired to a small company that has less than 10 employees. If there's been no mention of a drug test, but i'm on a 'trial' period of 3 months for my employment and before my health insurance kicks in, is it possible that there would be a test right before I get the insurance?

I've gone 2 months without any weed and i'd LOVE to be able to partake and celebrate my new job. :thank you:

if they drug test it could be any time from now until the day you quit. Best to keep a bottle of synthetic urine on you at all times.

But if they don't then i guess you golden until you get hurt on the job and then they always drug test. Most of the time its Pre-Employment Drug test.. So before you start working they test you. Check the hand book

Depending on the insurance company, they could be the ones who do the drug test. I am not sure for workers insurance, but for life insurance the company sent a nurse to my house to do a history, collect a blood sample, and a urine sample. It was for a $400,000 life policy but I think any insurance company could request at least a urine sample. If they randomly test work policy holders, you could never know when.

I got a govt job once, and they drug tested me; I had a smoke or two the night before but they never mentioned it and I got the job.
I doubt for such a small company and it's not gov't they will test you.

Direct hire. This is in a creative industry related business. I just don't want to take any outrageous risks, i'd consider this a 'dream job'.

if it's really a 'dream job' then lay low well beyond the time the insurance kicks in, asking another employee about testing is just about as close to fessin' up as you can get. If you haven't heard about testing you might have a friend of yours call and ask about employment there, have him ask about testing using the excuse "I'm prescribed pain medication but only use it when it doesn't interfere with my work."

I wouldn't worry about it. In my experience with creative industry shops... most of the really creatives are open or closet smokers anyway. So... if you're not perceptive, you'd think you were working in a straight shop.

Over the years... many people in professional environments have been shocked to find out I use cannabis. *shrug*

Keep it down for a few months while you scope out the place. :D

I have to agree, if it really is a dream job then Stoner4Life's advice above is spot on. When you got something you consider to be a dream or ideal then you don't take unnecessary risks with it.

I'd guess you're not going to get tested, probably 90% no. For a dream job, maybe get a fake urine set up and make sure you know how to give them a sample at the right temp. Consider it insurance, and compared to car insurance, cheap. Otherwise, quit for 2 weeks before the permanent hire, give them a watery sample if they even ask and you should be fine.

Small companies are far less likely to test than larger ones. Once companies get big, especially production facilities, its just a matter of time before people get hurt and sue and then companies go corporate and start asking for pee.

Small companies usually just have companies run the paper chromatography test that is cheaper and a lot less sensitive.

The art of finding out if you will be tested is always the hardest part. Finding a way to know, without giving them the wrong idea right at the start of a new job, is tricky.

I HATE having to deal with this crap. 23 times at least I've been tested (never failed) but its a mental drain every time. Fuckers.

thanks for the advice everybody. i've already gone a couple months without smoking, i suppose i can go a couple more. i should be finding out soon enough if they're going to test. and i'll keep synthetic urine on the side just in case.

Yeah just waiting is really the smart way to go for a dream job. Dream jobs don't come along very often, most people never even get a shot at a dream job and settle for whatever job they can get. So it's better to just wait until you feel fairly secure there and you have a clearer idea of what the company policies/practices are regarding drug testing. There will be plenty of time for partying later on down the road.
