Cannabis in the Workplace

My job is pretty laid back and chill for the most part..it is work, I take it seriously, people trust me to do a good job ya know..but, what I find so interesting is how many people think I could just get away with blazing stinky nugs because the owners of the building are usually never around when I am working.

You see, I regularly talk to people about a wide range of subjects at this business..I'm allowed to just mingle if I feel like it...cannabis and drug laws always come up it seems like..and one thing that is so wild to me is that a few people usually say things like, "hey, you could totally blaze up outside and come back in and work and get away with it."...I always say that I think it's okay to come in and work after a good wake n bake and do your thing, but there's a line you cross when you are on someone elses property, you're bringing cannabis onto it with you (and maybe a pipe), and they're trusting you to be there and do your job and not outside out of view getting baked.

So, as far as I'm concerned, I think it's okay to come in baked and work and get things done (just not regularly), but I think it's just a bad idea to bring cannabis to the workplace and use it there, too.

What do you guys think? Any experiences?

Totally depends on the job in question. I've worked for myself a LOT, and worked a lot of jobs where I'm left by myself. So the question of whether or not to blaze up has a lot to do with what I'm doing.

Working with skittish horses--not gonna toke.
Cleaning the rental cabin before the next guest--gonna smoke.
Weeding and prepping veggie beds--gonna smoke.
Working phones and heavy customer service--not gonna smoke.
Working retail with lots of customers--not gonna smoke.
Working a fish room--GONNA SMOKE for sure.
Speaking to the county board of supervisors--not gonna toke too soon prior.

Having cannabis with me? In my opinion it's not their business if I have a bowl and some weed out in my car. I know that legally, from most employers' stance, this is not the case.

When I first learned to ride my motorcycle I didn't smoke prior to or during the ride. I wasn't comfortable enough with my own skills to place yet another limitation on them. Once I became as comfortable riding as driving, then I would incorporate it. In fact, with long rides, I have to be able to take smoke breaks or my hips & back just can't take it and I won't make it back home.

if they're on their brake, and toke it up without bothering anyone or being noticed, and come back and keep up with their tasks, why not?

personally, I rather not toke up at work nor even before, my work is pretty busy all the time non-stop.

it wasn't like my old job at a pro recording studio, now that was sweet! too bad it closed down at the location and moved out the country.

I work in a construction trade and I used to smoke at work quite a bit. It's not a good habit to get in to tho, I always got bugged out when I would have to deal with customers and foreman and shit.

If I had to do something relatively dangerous I wouldn't smoke. Some of the places I had to work if you got hurt you would be drug tested immediately.

Im almost always somewhat buzzed while at work. I work retail, no machinery or anything like that, just gotta deal with people. I go in the back room every couple hours and take a quick hit from my oil rig.

I don't think any drug that can impair your judgement should be consumed at work.. Safety first after all we don't want anyone getting hurt. If your high and accident happens. Some real bad shit will becoming your way..

depends what job imo.

as a short order cook? no way, that job depends on speed and excellent timing to do properly, usually the places I worked were too busy to allow cooks a break, an unfair labor law but common practice in NY.

as a taxi driver? yes but just enough to take the edge off my attitude. A heightened awareness of my surroundings, always having a well maintained cab and never out-driving the current road conditions kept me accident free. I never got so blazed as to make me tired or goofy behind the wheel. I never dropped or forgot calls, never missed trains my passengers were trying to make @ the station and I answered my radio promptly, weed never affected me adversely in that job.

as a roofer? m-fing never. I've seen too many close calls and a momentary lapse of attention can quickly spell doom.

Same with logging and any other heavy equipment jobs.

In the past I blazed and worked stoned at work...these were usually more menial jobs or restaurant jobs that required little thought. In some cases at certain eating establishments the entire kitchen staff would be stoned.
I was also much younger, in my late teens and early twenties..

Im older now, and have job with many responsibilities, so there is no way I can get baked at work...even partying during the week is more or less out of the question.

These days I also think that in most cases it would be a violation of worker/employer trust to show up stoned at work or blaze at work, although for some jobs this view would have to be taken on a case by case basis.

Rolling in stoned to work.... hmmmm probably my most FAVORITE way to show up.

In fact, I take pride saying that I have smoked EVERy day, at or before 6 AM, rain or shine, work or not, for the past 19 years straight.
I ALWAYS have someone to smoke with at my job(s), or someone to bum a bowl from. :)

I have been a Chef, Golf course Superintendant, Insurance salesman, Car Salesman, Fishing Guide, Ski Instructor, Carpenter, Shoe Salesman, Service station Mechanic, Little League Coach, Truck Driver, Property Risk Assement (for a Bank), Customer Service for Sears ( Phone operator), Pool/ Hot Tub Technician, as well as PTA Member and Rotary Club.

That's my experience.
I just make it clear to people when it comes up: I am who I am, if you don't like it, one of us can leave.

I feel bad for the people who can, but don't...

I also think that waiting to get out of work can be an awesome time to smoke too! 4:20 came about for a reason, no?

I'm an electrician. I tend to make more dumb mistakes when I'm sober. Though it does depend on what I'm doing that day. While I feel safe doing dangerous tasks while a bit high, I don't feel like it is fair to those working with me. But if I'm doing some mindless task like digging a ditch, running conduit, or making a bunch of terminations; you better believe I'll be going out for lunch :) I love getting stoned when I'm working on a boom lift.

My buddy says "if they've never seen you sober, they've never seen you high." If you're always high from day one, nobody will know the difference.

I work in a very dangerous field as it is, with regular drug testing. Ive been trying my best to stay under the radar and only smoking after work in the hotel. I made the mistake of smoking a few times during a job, and it just freaks me out too much. I dont want to go into too much detail about what i do, but Im working with pressures from 1000psi-10,000psi at all times. I have a crew of guys that depend on me to be on my A game, and cover their asses. If shit goes down, its going to cost lives in my field.
