Hell no don't strain out the perlite - I'm growing clones in the Roots just read the bag where it sez water for 7 days then add nutes, is what I did and my clones have been growing with no issues from ferts. I do the feed, feed, water routine with it - so far no issues - I did find the stalks to be weak-ish and the leaves whispy-ish but maybe it's a given with the strain (C99) so I have 'em LST-ing for a week now and whatta difference, they strengthened right up. Only thing questionable to me about the Roots is the very airy-fluffy-ness of it like when I water, the water sits for 4-5 min, on top of the coco so I have to wait til it settles til I give more water and then I have to redistribute the coco to cover the roots cause the floating period of the water changes where the coco was sitting but, I did forget to do the 2" of perlite on the bottom so maybe that's why it does that. I am new to coco growing but decided to use it for clones after reading that coco contains beneficial bacteria to ward off bugs and mites that seems to be prevalent with clones.

thx for the back up, no hate of coco though, currently ive got coco in my mix and my plants are thriving and i attribute it in part to the coco, its just straight coco for me that is a thing of the past.
my nute i ran with coco was floranova bloom and also the lucas form of the micro series from gh. if coco works for u enjoy it.
No more preaching pastor of pesticides in the coco hempy thread.

Hey Luciferian, What's your mix like and are you getting any increased potency from your coco mix? You use a "mixed" hempy bucket, right?
5mL Maxibloom/gal of water in coco perlite and molasses + water for the finish DOES NOT work in hempy style buckets in my buddy's setup as far as potency is concerned.
I suggested Canna coco and Cannanutes........ as another member just posted........... as this is a proven combination............... I think?
Or as they say in Mexico, it could be in the water.
Don't care to hijack so I'll be heading to the coco forum after this.

Attack or err.... an attempt to save your health or others (<--main thing as you probably sell and they for one might not want pesticide gas in their buds which is what your DOING) .. umm same thing. Not.

This is probably why people complain about the low quality of most commercial dutch weed.
Interesting. Been doing this a while.... most of it with hydro.
Where are the nutes in a tank of plain r/o water? Coco holds a lot more nutes than a tank of plain water... that's for sure. Most strains require at least 7 days... some weaker 'eaters' require longer.
How much experience did you say you had?

This thread answered all the questions I had about Hempy with Coco!!! Now I know what I'm about to use my DWC buckets for...
I'm gonna run 4 plants in 5 gallon hempy buckets, 4x4x7 secret jardin tent, 600w hps w dimmable ballast...
I'll be starting seeds in a couple weeks...this seems much easier than dwc...

1st time grower here, and I am VERY satisfied with the ease of this approach.
My goal initially was to go with a DWC rig, however, there was no way I could realistically keep my rez cool given my particular grow space, so I looked for something else and found this approach.
While some recommended soil for a first grow, I believe the coco is actually easier and more forgiving, especially when you don't know how to properly water your plant....which I didn't.
However, the coco, combined with the hempy rez, gives you a lot of wiggle room, and if you fuck something up, like I did, you can see the mistake fast, and work to correct it fast, which I did.IMO, it's a great system, especially if you are a N00b like me.
My plants are doing fine, and I've got a few pepper plants growing using the same system as well. If it works for me, it can work for anyone, and it's very low maintenance.

Hey I was just wondering if there was any benefits of adding perlite to the coco. I know theres already a layer of perlite at the bottom, but will mixing 50/50 coco perlite or something close to that have an advantage over only using coco on top? It would allow more air to go through and thus more waterings than coco alone. Not sure if it would make a difference.
I think you missed the point of hempys . coco hempys give you a rez that allows you to water every few days instead of everyday like DTW coco pots . If you like the idea of watering everyday or have a drip system .... then DTW is the way to go . if you can't be there to water everyday then go with the hempys . this is the reason i use both styles . during the summer when i like to take off camping for a weekend I saturate my hempys & I can leave for 3 days & not come back to dead plants . but during the winter I go back to DTW & can feed everyday with no problems . even though i'm kinda lazy & hook up the drippers

I've got a 20 gallon smart pot I'm going to do hempy with a saucer and just let the nutes sit in the saucer, that way I can see how much water is left. Ive done it before and it worked great, but that was with perlite/vermeculite mix and in plastic pots though. This time I've got a 20 gallon smart pot with a few inches of perlite at the bottom, mixed in a 50/50 ratio of perlite and coco. I'm just wondering if that much perlite into coco will have added benefits. I forgot where, but someone was starting a side by side comparison between the two.
Anyone ever use the combo of compost tea with this method??

I've heard of teas being used but I don't think it works well with soil because I read that it can start root rot... It would be a good experiment to try though!

I know this is an old post but beware, the blumats do fail, too often for me, they would either clog or have some sort of air trap issue and stay open. Great concept but really best as a backup system for patio plants.Yes, blumats are not cheap, but they'll be worth every one of those preaty pennies. lol
