the texas reference was my fault I think, since I told about my experience of an out of hand political discussion with a fundamental christian who was from texas.
altough as a foreigner texas seems to be full of fundamental christians and rednecks, but ofcourse I know there are probably plenty of other groups too, and also plenty of fundamental christians in other states. but, as someone not living in the US, my perspective on your states is really limited, and for us foreigners(or at least for me), texas seems to be the state with most of those people. that view also got strengthened with bush being from texas btw.
I've also heard some references from americans online of alabama being full of rednecks, but besides that I know absolutely nothing about alabama, altough I do think there was some popsng about it
the only thought colorado provokes for me is that it is the state where south park plays in. and that they have medical cannabis as far as I know
on a slightly related but mostly unrelated note, the american use of liberal is always a bit weird to me, since here in the netherlands we call the rightwing/conservatives liberal(well actually our word is 'liberaal' and 'liberalen' for liberals, but you see the similarity)
not all our rightwing conservatives are liberals tough, but liberals around here is the rightwing that is not affiliated with religion, but is on the side of business owners and rich people, in favor of privatising as much as possible and letting the market free.
our other rightwinggroup are the christians, our biggest centerright party is christian and has christian in the name, but they aren't that pronounced religious.
our leftwing are the socialists, but everytime I read about american politics I get the idea 'socialist' is more a kind of curseword/insult in the US....(same with atheist btw)
altough maybe the use of liberal is correct in that context, since of you would place for example obama here in the netherlands he would probably be far-right
but it still always is a bit weird to me, associating liberal with leftwing
if I had to name a liberal american state, I would probably say california, mostly because of the medical cannabis-situation wich lately seems to have gotten more free as here in the netherlands(especially since our government is moving in the opposite direction)
