can't pop a male

not saying its too bad, but i have popped at least 50 seeds over the last 4 years, and only 1 turned out male. it was a mendocino purple.i saved pollen. and dusted a 80's bagseed female that was my outdoor plant last season. so far, i found 10 nice mature seeds, still got a few oz to go through. ( maybe this years OD ) these seeds range from 80's and 90's bagseeds to reputable breeder seeds bought through the 'boo. i just want to make some seeds, wwwaaaa! i know. i like getting high percentage of females, makes it easier to pop ones to flower out. because of my space, i can only keep a few moms on hand, and can only pop a couple seeds at a time.

do you guys have these kinds of m/f ratios??

if i finally get some males, what types of traits do you look for to become pollen donors??

some growers keep moms, but do people keep dads?? or just keep hopefully enough pollen??

I have some male herijuana ibl clones I keep for breeding. I too have noticed the same thing as far as the lack of getting males when you do lots of seeds at a time. I personally think that it is caused by people doing fem seeds and then crossing them with regular stuff and not saying that they did that. I personally cannot stand auto's and fems. Having said that, I myself have had to resort to doing sts on a black rose clone so I could get some seeds. I am in the process of growing out those seeds to find a male. Once I find the male then I am going to use it and see if I can get some real seeds from the br, ones that actually grow out males and females.

I look for males that flower late, are resinous, stinky, no hollow stems and are not lanky. That's a readers digest answer really because it can get a whole lot more involved.

i gots 3 males chillin atm.
vitality/vigor, smell/odor, structure, & trichomes...give me an indication of traits i would wanna keep, and pass on to the progeny.

i don't mind getting males occasionally, but when they dominate a purchase it is a challenge to determine which stays.

brother, you better sit down. a selfed plant throws only female seed....(mostly)...
good news is you can make lots of female seed this way, no needing a male.

I'v noticed in my own operation that I get more males toward the end of the seed popping season and almost none at the beginning. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing?

good news is you can make lots of female seed this way, no needing a male.

Yep, that's a fact...it's that "mostly" that I am hoping for. Unless someone were to know Heath personally I don't think that regular
seeds are available, only fems. I hope to change all that.

Try warmer temps during the germ/seedling stage. I know it's anecdotal, but when I germed a bunch of Blue Moonshine F2 seeds in January, I got all females. Later that summer, I germed my last 6 and every single one was male.

I've also read that higher temps result in higher ratio of males, but I forget where.

Hell, it works for alligator eggs...

If you're hunting for males you definitely need to plant more than a couple seeds. Mass plant in cups, turn 12/12 soon and leave the plants there until sex, is not hard and doesnt require a big space.

I thought I was the only one, I have a few mothers that I keep, but over my entire time of doing this, I've probably popped exactly the same amount as the OP, to find my keepers and out of all of those I maybe had about 5 males ever, now I'm actually mad because I got rid of all the males, one in particular that I wish I would have kept because the offspring from it made some extremely good plants

I don't think so, those are most likely knock offs or fems, never seen a real black rose in seed form in a few years on any site. If there is one then pleas pm the info to me.

last year i popped 31 seeds, 21 females and 10 males. holding on to 2 males as dads.

just threw down 18, so we will see what turns up this time.

I retract my other post, you are indeed 100% correct, I found the site and it is legit, confirmed by heath himself on another board. Oh happy day!
