Can people ID strains by appearance?

Many months ago a friend goaded me into buying a light and taking a couple of clones. He said it was easy to do this and he'd help me every step of the way.

Well, he didn't...but I've got four clones that I'm close to harvesting. He said two of the plants were Sour Diesel, and the pics I've found show that as being a nice green looking plant in flower, so I know which two they are.

Problem is...I don't know what the other strain is...but it's got a magnificent shade of purple working.

I realize that this is the longest of longshots and this following inquiry might be a game changer in the "there are no stupid questions" discussion, but here goes:

Does that kind of bud look familiar to anyone? Or at least does anyone have any ideas or suggestions about a family it might belong to?? I've named my plants, but I kinda want to know what exactly that purple one is.

Thanks in advance.

It really can't be decided what strain it is from just looking at. That said if you like the color, and it is great smoke then keep cloning and smoking it. IMHO!

Ive had sour d's come out like that before. There def could be some sour genes in there. Heres some ECSD. The leaves turn a pinkish purple color in cold environments.

Hey Mike: whatever strain, it's an awesome plant-compliments on your grow technique.

could be a purple erkle! its not a purple sativa and its not a grand daddy purple. sativa dom genetics; possibilty of a purple haze. you will know when cured and smoked. if it knocks you into lala land then haze hybrid. fox tail buds? = blueberry

i have seen that bud structure somewhere but cannot place it; warlock perhaps

you can narrow it down from a list of choices, pretty accurately if you have a small list and know each one well..., but throwing darts in the dark and taking wild guesses is just that... guesses....

pretty plant either way :smoke:

if that is because of my opinion, its not wild guesses. fox tail buds mean blueberry genetics, tight nug clusters mean things like warlock and the purple, blue and hashplant/hazes i have grown for many a year. once he smokes it the high can narrow down the choices even more as will the smell when curing. hopefully it is not a cat piss smell

IMO

fox tail does not mean blueberry in the genetics, without knowing the genetic markup of a strain you can't make generalizations like these, many plants with no blueberry genetics will foxtail under certain conditions..

there are ways you can know.. if you know the clones that are going around in your area.. maybe there's a dispensary with a bunch of known strains and you could narrow it down to a few based on your location ... but you can't just look at a plant like this without any prior knowledge and say what it is. Plants can look so different depending on the grow medium and climate.

yep, always a "mastermind" in these threads splitting hairs sorta speaking. i said foxtail is a trait of blueberry; not that other strains dont have it and IMO, do you know what this means?

its a good looking plant and maybe a "blue" is not a wild guess as i have grown and bred about 40 hybrids of the original blueberry sativa. of which the erkle is 1 by the way.

and NO you cant ID strains by appearance but i can pick out certain ones having worked them for years and knowing the pheno traits. sativa/DOM and indica/DOM are fairly easy by the leaf structure and if it excceeds 6' then you got sativa. leaf patterns can tell you things and smell. like if its cat piss, lemon, blueberry or skunk! sandelwood, berry, chocolate; the list goes on. then there is the curing smell and the smoke report.

Not to "split hairs" here bro, but your EXACT words were "fox tail buds mean blueberry genetics, tight nug clusters mean things like warlock and the purple, blue and hashplant/hazes i have grown for many a year". You didn't say trait.

Do you know what you even typed?

Damn, that plant looks dialed in like a motherfucker... I think you might have been better off without your buddy's help, haha.

Everyone can guess, but not one person will be right. There's no way to know.
