Health Canada turns to black market for advice on growing pot
OTTAWA, Feb. 22, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - After almost ten years in the business of selling marijuana, Health Canada finally recognizes the expertise of those it had sought to exclude—medical marijuana growers and distributors operating outside the law and whose activities pre-date the existence of any legal medical marijuana framework.

Marc-Boris St-Maurice, from the Montreal Compassion Center, a medical cannabis dispensary founded in 1999, will be participating in a consultation meeting with health Canada officials and other stakeholders this Wednesday Feb 22nd, in Ottawa to share his expertise on how to produce and distribute medical marijuana.

Until now, health Canada has been loathe to acknowledge the important contribution made by those who risked, and in many cases still face legal problems for having sought only to come to the aid of those seriously ill and suffering Canadians who benefit from the use of marijuana. It is high time this expertise is recognized for the good of all those needing safe, reliable access to this life saving product.

Mr. St-Maurice, who will be attending the meeting starting at 9am, will be available for comment from 12:00 till 12:45 this Wednesday February 22nd, in the lobby of the "Minto Suite Hotel", 185 Lyon street, Ottawa

In my opinion the article is a bit misleading. The article makes it seem that Health Canada is looking for input across the board for the medical marijuana. The following text describes the type of input they want right now.

I am attending this meeting, and in the spirit of transparency and solidarity, I am sharing this information with all MMAR patients, and general cannabis users!

EMAIL START

This email is to confirm that you have been registered to attend the February 22, 2012 meeting in Ottawa, Ontario from 9:00 - 16:30.

This meeting is for those who have expressed interest in becoming licensed commercial producers under the new Marihuana Medical Access Program. This meeting is not an information session on how to become a licensed commercial producer of marihuana for medical purposes. Health Canada is seeking input on what the regulatory requirements could be in regards to commercial production. We will be looking specifically for technical input on quality, security and record keeping practices for growing and manufacturing marihuana for medical purposes. Due to space restrictions, this meeting is intended for individuals with technical background knowledge in the above mentioned areas and participation is limited to a single representative from your organization.

It is important to note that this meeting is not intended to consult on the proposed elimination of personal and designated production, nor the distribution of marihuana for medical purposes through other intermediaries such as dispensaries. There will be additional opportunities for comment on these and other aspects of the regulatory framework when a proposal is prepublished in the Canada Gazette, Part I, late in 2012.

The agenda and other relevant documentation have been attached below to help participants prepare for the meeting. If the description above and the following attachments do not match your expectations of the meeting, please let us know that your name should be removed from the participation list.

**Lunch will be provided at this meeting**

Sincerely,

Medical Marihuana Regulatory Reform
Controlled Substances and Tobacco Directorate
Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch
Health Canada

I heard Boris recommended that producers should have a degree in microbiology. He was in the position they are speaking of for a while, I bet he has no degree in microbiology. I wonder how he was capable of doing his job back then? Peace GS

At this point I would suggest to any licensee that, when you renew you should apply for an increase. You have gone a year trying what they have recommended. Time to try something new. Things may fall and you may be grandfathered in with what you have. You may not need it now, but you are not sure you won't in the future. Peace GS

Ya I paid less as well, but figured it might be worth folks while to not have to go outside the city. Plus Surrey scares me. They just start doing stuff there, whether it is legal or not. Once the HA dude beat them in court, they were told not to do the fireman's searches anymore. The mayor, Diane Watts said ,oh don't worry we will find away around it. The very thing cops accuse criminals of doing. Peace GS

I heard Health Canada is on the island checking plant counts. Just a heads up.

Asked the lawyer if they can just show up surprise stylee and ask to see. His reply is below. Peace GS

Yes they can but you are perfectly entitled to say you need to talk to the ATP and/or counsel. That's what I'd recommend unless you have no problem letting them in.

ps. he added this after:

Somewhat different rules also apply if grow is in a residence. I will try to write more on this later.

In a place like Vancouver you will likely be ok. Most other places only the MMAR will make you safe. Good luck. Peace GS
