Thermos project, need advice

So I was planning on dissolving a oz puck of pressed bubble in butane & use a thermos technique. I've used a micro planer to break down the puck. So my question is do I mix the bubble and butane outside of the thermos, and than put the mixture in the thermos, put on the top, and than in the freezer for a 90 min soak. After filter with a unbleached coffee filter, and typical evaporation techniques.

Also would 1.5 cans of lucienne be enough, or too much?

Thanks for the help!:thank you:

no do not mix the bubble and butane outside of thermos that would defeat the purpose of the thermos. you use a cold thermos to keep the butane in a liquid state, so put your bubble into the thermos and spray your butane in. for an ounce of hash doing a soak id say more like 2 full cans atleast.

jump should be able to answer any questions you have about using a thermos

I would put the bubble in the thermos, freeze it along with the butane cans, and then put the butane in with the hash.

How much butane you use, depends a lot on the size of the thermos. 450 ml should be enough to dissolve 28 grams of bubble, if it is covered in liquid.

Thanks for the quick responds guys! On can of lucienne, and one large Coleman Thermos with an ounce of micro planed bubble in the freezer. Gonna probably freeze things for about three hours, than blast. Should I keep the top on the thermos while in the freezer ... (using the garage freezer BTW, lol), or will this not matter because the butane won't be evaporating?

Once again. Thanks fellow hashers!

I would keep it in the freezer at -18C/0F for a day or so before blasting. I leave the drilled and vented cap on to keep thing out, but don't use the plug.

I wouldn't put it back in the freezer. I put the thermos outside, in a cool spot (~<60F), and lose negligible butane in an hours time. That is as long as I have ever extracted with a thermos, but you aren't worried about water soluble pickup, so you should be able to soak about as long as you can keep it liquid. I'm guessing that would be several hours.

PS: Perhaps Jump or Hammalama can share how long they have been able to keep butane around in a thermos.

I just noticed you are using a large thermos, and the reason I shouldn't do math in my head heavily medicated.

What I meant to say to your question about 1 1/2 300 ml cans, was to say yes, that 1 1/2 cans, or 450 ml should be enough to dissolve an ounce of bubble, and somehow I doubled it in my head when I wrote 900 ml.

Having said that, a big thermos may require more. Don't be stingy with the relatively cheap butane. The small thermos in the picture on my thread holds two cans to the top, and I use about 1 1/2 cans.

I think there is a recent post in this forum that has a pic of a freezer with the door blown off.
I second the suggestion of not leaving a thermos full of butane in your freezer. Good luck with project!

Butane can be placed in the freezer just in its original packaging.
When it is poured from the container into a thermos, do not bring it into the room.

Unground hashish dissolved in butane is very slow.
It should be crushed as thin as possible.
The lower the temperature, the slower dissolution.

Pre-cooling below the boiling point of butane minimizes the evaporation of gas during the filling and make the process more relaxed, without the effect of splashing extinguisher.

Thermos keeps the set temperature for a long time.

The most risky and dangerous part of the process is the evaporation of butane.

If you intend to subsequent dissolution in ethanol, then you should not evaporate butane with a flat dish, preferably a more compact container with high sides,
my favorite vessel for this purpose, a spherical glass teapot.

This sounds like a really good way to extract oil from hash.

In the past, I made some bubble hash with a bunch of trim and ran it through a tube to collect the oil. I was hoping it would turn out to be a easier way to process a lot of trim into oil without filling 100's of butane tubes. It didn't work as good as I expected and needed several passes of butane to get a good yield.

Maybe this would be the best way to process large amounts of trim/bud into oil(water separation -->thermos butane soak)?

jump117, do you use a can opener to open the frozen butane containers, or do you spray into a separate vessel?

Or probably more modern ( dry ice separation >thermos butane soak).

No need in can opener, spray directly from the can into the thermos , look –
Currently, I prefer to use a thermos flask as an extractor,
which in my experience, has replaced the glass teapot, which had replaced the extractor tube.

In order to accommodate a teapot, coffeepot, PET bottle or thermos,
you need to mount the port to enter the nozzle of the can into the lid of the extractor.
A set of these plastic adapters are usually present on the can cap.

The adapter must be very tightly inserted into the prepared hole.
When you install in a plastic lid, a hole is made slightly smaller and softened by heating before inserting adapter.

Narrow part of the adapter should be cut. The nozzle of the can should protrude from the cut-off adapter,
so nothing is reduced flow of gas during the filling.

thought it worth mentioning that a stainless steel thermos (the inside vacuum bottle, not just the outside) is a safer choice over the cheaper and more common glass bottles.

A very good point, as the thermal shock can break the glass ones.

Also beware of thermos containers plastic coated on the inside .

Note and avoid static spark when working with metal equipment

So finally got around to the extraction today, and am pleased with the results. After smoking a little of the afgoo puck with friends, and giving some of it away, I was left with about 14 gram to extract. I will talk to the maker to request unpressed bubble next time ... however I'd like to here everyones thoughts on this, does pressing do something to the end product? ... I let the micro planed hash sit in the thermos in the freezer for about 48 hours. Pre-chilled 2 cans of lucienne as well. Sprayed 1.5 cans of butane and let sit in the garage for about 90 mins. After this I noticed a lot of the hash didn't dissolve, but rather formed a clump on the bottom of the thermos. At this point I agitated the butane around a bit to help break things up more. I should have gone a bit longer, but really couldn't see the bottom of the thermos since it was a milky brown color. I poured the butane mix through a stainless steel strainer, and than through a non bleached coffee filter into a pyrex dish. Preformed a steam evaporation, than a slight whip, and into the vac chamber at 100 degrees vac'd to -30 hg. End result was a very stable, VERY shatter! I ended up with about 7 grams, and aprox 7 grams left in the thermos that didn't get dissolved. I'll put some pics up tomorrow .... gonna play with this process tomorrow with fresh frozen!

Good job! How are taste and effects!

Sounds like running the remains again, might be worthwhile.
