What are the best reservoirs you guys are using. how big of a water storage tank would you need for every dozen 200 gallon smartpots....what about for 50+ 200 gallon smartpots?

i was at a friends 100+ plant garden and they had a bunch of 300 gallon green storage tanks...and each section of the garden had its own tank. i want to run something similar, il have to ask him what he used because he doesnt post on IC anymore..

something with a spigot for draining would be nice too...but pretty sure we just drop the pumps into the tank and let them run straight out the top or something..

price is also a factor..since some tanks run up to several thousand dollars..id like to keep it under 500 for the tank if thats possible.

Check www.tank-depot.com and look for their water containers. Pick one that ships out of California and you can pickup at 91/110 fwy. I got a 300 gallon for under $300.

Just call the number in NY and tell them you want to pickup. It took me talking to two people to get it done, but I've done it twice since then.

Where is your main water source? by truck, well or spring? what me and my hommies like to do is get a green storage tank say 2500-5000 gallon, set it up hill from the garden site, and run a two inch line from the tank to the garden where we have a 300 gallon rubbermaid rezy for every 25 200 gallon pots where we hand water with pump/hose/wand setup. The 2 in line quickly fills the rez and mixes nutrients well with the amount of pressure it has, and you just keep topping off your main tank as needed. Or if it suits, you can just run a hose from your well straight to a 300 gallon rezy and fill it up every morning/watering, but takes more time. We water every morning soon as sun hits the leaves.

A $500 budget isn't going to get you a very big tank. Water storage is CRITICAL, you cannot have too much. Usually a plastic tank will run about $1-$0.75 per gallon of storage so you will probably only be able to get a 500-750 gallon tank if you buy new. Your climate and growing medium will greatly affect how much water you use so it's hard to give an exact answer.

A large plant in summer can easily consume 10-15 gallons a day, so you are talking 500-750 gallons or more PER DAY for 50 smart pots. If you use a medium that has good water retention, and use mulch, or grow smaller plants, you can get away with much less, but you should always over-figure your water budget. IMO you want at least a weeks worth of water, so that's a good 3,000-4,000 gallons of storage. I would recommend you re-budget your grow and put more $$ into you water system. Water is essential and I have seen a LOT of growers fuck up their grows from having water issues. Good soil, good genetics, and a good location won't count for anything if you do not have an abundant supply of good quality water. Water is worth it's weight in gold when you are growing so don't forget that!

Can't comment on the water rez, but I can tell you a good ACT brew can greatly increase your water retention in ANY soil. Consider buying a plastic rez for a brewer as well. ACT is worth it's weight in gold, not just plain water. Cone bottom tanks work great for brewers and the site posted above has them as well.

thanks for your posts very helpful...im actually pretty lucky to i have a well already on the property i think its around 600 gph...spits up really clean clear water from lake oroville...it sits at higher elevation than the garden too, around 25 yards uphill, so connecting that well to a large storage tank and running a gravity line to the reservoirs sounds like the plan thanks z-ro..

yea my 500 dollar budget isnt gonna work...thinking about grabbing 4 of those 275 gal tanks

Does that mean you will be filling your res's every day? 50 smart pots will drink up more than 1100 gallons in two days in the heat of summer.

I have 14- 200 gallon smart pots. I have a 2500 gallon tank. I can stretch it out to 2 weeks if need be but thats pushing it to the limits especially late in the season. It's close to or over 100 degrees most days so they drink a lot. You can transport a 2500 on the back of a standard 1/2 ton truck. Remember you have to have a way to fill the tank! Mine is about 75 ft in elevation above the garden so I have plenty of pressure. Volume of water is another deal. I run all of my pots off one tank and have it split off into 4 different timers that come on and off at different times since my delivery line is only 5/8 I only water 3 pots at a time. Loomis Tanks in Paso Robles has sales sometimes. I got my 2500 for $600 but that was a few years back.
