Source? I found sources confirming that he requested limiting language be left out of the bill that would preclude the rights that the government already has, rights given to it by the congress after 9/11 under the Bush 43 administration. As far as I can find he didn't ask to be given the right to indefinitely imprison terrorists(whether American citizens or not), he already had it.

IC isn't hosted in the United States or Canada correct? As long as they are using secure international hosting from a country that doesn't cooperate with the US on these matters IC and its users should have nothing to worry about. Megaupload's mistake was 1 that it had content partially hosted on servers leased in Virginia. Or at least that is my understanding of the legal justification.

I also just started reading and looking for more information and learned for myself ...
The gist I picked up was before the latest NDAA that appears to allow something new and unrighteous, it was actually happening in the Bush Administration. We just never detained an American citizen for suspicion in the US.
SCOTUS ruled in favor of indefinite detention of American citizens in 2004 - Hamdi vs Rumsfeld. The military could pick up enemy combatants on the battlefield and send them to GITMO or the mirror in Afghanistan.
Under Bush, the CIA was largely removed from FBI and civilian type investigations for terrorism and global white collar crime. Now working primarily in association with the military, the CIA started picking up folks anywhere outside the battlefield.
I would assume FBI might investigate domestic terrorists but not really sure since the Patriot Act became law. Members of Congress, the military and lobbyists for private contractors actually want to expand the role of tribunals to support suspects who've up to now been prosecuted in civilian courts.
Obama had two aspects to deal with. Not sure if you're aware we're not adding to the prisoner count at GITMO. 82 prisoners have been cleared for reaptriation. Even though Bush had to repatriate hundreds of GITMO prisoners he couldn't charge in military commissions, the opposition in Congress won't allow Obama to do the same thing with the 82. Proponents of GITMO see the numbers dropping and that's counter to their intent. Key lawmakers like Graham and McCain are who I'm talking about.
Obama failed to persuade Congress to allow prosecution of KSM in civilian court. Opposition demanded KSM see tribunal. Had Obama vetoed the NDAA, we'd still be under the Bush process where the military or CIA could not only arrest or capture suspected terrorists, they could send them directly to indefinite detention, solely on SOD's order.
You're right, Obama said he'd veto the bill, only to reverse course at the last minute. What happened was Obama realized he had no civilian trial options for domestic enemy combatants (an aspect we never codified). Rather than risk the old system morphing into FBI or other domestic law enforcement being required to turn over US citizens to tribunals, i.e. military CIA, GITMO (all under the auspices of the Secretary of Defense,) the last minute language for US citizen detention requires the consent of the president, SOD and SOS. In addition, Obama said he wouldn't use the provision to detain US citizens. If I understand the administrations argument correctly, the language is also intended to add no new non-sanctioned prisoners to tribunals i.e. GITMO (under Bush's version where SOD made the sole call.
If the next president favors military commissions for citizen enemy combatants and wants to return the sole authority to the Pentagon, he'll have to have Congress ratify the provision.
In a world of shitty options, Obama did more to keep suspected citizen enemy combatants in the civilian prosecution realm. And the court hasn't had their say. It may be thrown out but that would go against the court's decision with Bush. The way things are happening with this president it wouldn't be surprising.

IMO, folks don't hate capitalism. It's our life blood. Folks hate elements of capitalism that stop working for the macro by exploiting unsustainable gain into small pools. IMO, Ron Paul would make it easier for the toxic elements of capitalism to thrive.
