I can't believe ppl are recommending pharmaceuticals but that just goes to show the power of advertising.
Avoid all pharma's and just take herbs like people have been doing for thousands of years. There are plenty to choose from, but the best I have found to counter insomnia are:
-------
Passionflower (passiflora incarnata)
Valerian root
--------
all of these herbs will help you sleep. My first recommendation would be to go with Passionflower. Brew a strong tea with any of these and lights out. With passionflower, not only is your sleep refreshing, but you are likely to experience good dreams. There is nothing wrong with combining valerian root with passionflower. It will produce a stronger sedative.
You can fight this sleep, but if you cooperate and really want to sleep, the herbs will be like your friend and gently guide you into Dreamland. It's all up to you. If you are plagued by worries then it may not work.
It is also important to avoid substances like sugar, caffeine, nicotine etc. not only at night, but also during the day. Don't go to bed hungry either, but nothing too sweet. Avoid stimulating TV shows too, they are as bad as caffeine. If it presses your buttons, it will keep you awake. Avoid arguments and people who like to start shit.
Exercise helps like a bomb though. Take a long walk and you'll enjoy the best sleep you ever had. If your body is exhausted, sleep will not be a problem, and you will not need any herbs either. You don't often hear about farmers that have trouble sleeping. Getting outdoors and soaking up sun helps a great deal too. There is something about sunlight on the skin that influences your circadian rhythm... and if you are black you need more sunlight than white people do. Black people are prone to vitamin D deficiency in winter months due to their resistance to UV rays. Also seasonal-affective disorder (SAD).
