How can I (legally/illegally) make a living in the cannabis industry ?

I am 25 years old, live in Canada, and I am considering going to university to study botany. But either way the only thing i can imagine myself happily doing for a living ( other then being a successfull musical artist or actor ) is doing somthing (preferably legally) in the cannabis industry. But due to cannabis laws there isnt much of a (legal) industry even in the netherlands.
I started this thread to examine the options I have to ( preferably legally ) work in the cannabis industry.
I would appreciate your help to shed some light on the topic.
I already know that there are many seed companies and compatition is tuff. but at least for the moment , I am not interested in starting my own seed company. I am experienced and interested in growing, Im definatly not the most experienced 25 year old in the world. but I love growing and love the cannabis culture, and have been scince i was 12 years old. which was the age i grew my first bagseed, that i was given from my friends older brother. I know that manny people would love to be able to make a career in the cannabis industry, and as a result I have plenty of competition.
Any way,I have a passion for, and a history of growing and curing fine cannabis and selling it for a fair price to cannabis lovers. somthing that I have never been able to do legally.

for the record I havent sold weed in over 5 years, but a few people wish i had !

and I forgot to mention i would like to be able to make a GOOD living in the industry ( good pay / salary )

Im not a greedy guy, im just one of the people that want to make good money doing what I love.

Well for a start if you are going to start a seed company, and I assume you mean breeding plants and selling the seeds, then you have got stiff competiton.
You have to pay your dues; DJ Short and Chimmera have travelled the world and collected landrace varieties and then gone from there, they have done their apprenticeship and are now master breeders. There are no shortcuts or easy bucks in that field. You can't just buy some Skunk and Northern Lights and cross them and put the seeds out there, you have to bring something new and unique to the table.
And as far as I know there are no legal ways to make money from cannabis, unless you live in the US and are in a state that allows medical marijuana dispensaries, but I think that you would find that if theres a buck to be made every man and his dog will be in on the act so you would have a lot of competition.
The bottom line is you have to be an outlaw, you have to break the law to make a buck.
Keep things in perspective, dont try to be a mr big, just grow and sell enought to get you through your degree, and then get a high paying professional job and from then on just grow for yourself.

I hate to say this, but support your liberal party there. they voted that they are now for cannabis legalization.

I am not much older than you and am half way finished with a degree in another field myself. I would absolutely love if i could make my living legally in the cannabis industry. I would love to legally grow and sell herb and seeds, breed it, research it, write about, talk about it, smoke it, and be surrounded by like-minded individuals instead of having to keep secret one of my truest passions. If you figure this one out let me know and I'll be right behind you.

heheh....thanks Cravenmore for the single best answer in this thread so far!

It's obvious NOONE can answer the OP's question w/o mentioning the HUGE FUCKING pink elelphant standing in front of us all....

Let's just say it is very possible to make a living (legally/illegally) in the (cough) cannibus industry......in fact you can do really well.

, just grow and sell enought to get you through your degree, and then get a high paying professional job and from then on just grow for yourself.

getting a high paying job is obviosly an option, but there arent that manny. and my point was finding a way to do what i love and make a good living doing it.
I know I probably wont be able to do so, but the fact that this thread exists is proof that im trying. and no matter what i end up doing il probably have a little personal grow

i guess you are joking about the porn star or boy toy thing so the only thing il say about those options
is that there both like stripping. You can only go so far then your too old. I dont want to do either for a liviing ( for me being a porn star would be a lot better then many of the jobs/careers out there) but realisticly i wont be a porn star. by choice or other wise.

megayields: what is OP ,and could you explain the pink elephant remark ?

I dont want to move to the states and the dispensaries there are operating in a legal grey area, the feds could come knocking the door down at any moment (not good enougf for me, and im basicly broke so starting a dispensary is unrealistic, aspecially with all the competition).
we have dispensaries here and i think they also operate in a legal grey area. I heard about a few dispensary busts in ontario (where i am). I dont think anyone can legally sell mj here eccept the government. and so far iv heard they sell pretty crappy weed and they often burn thier own crops when they turn out " too strong "

Even not considering the competition in growing business, both bud and seed, due to legal status that line of work would really be extremely stressing. I sure coudn't handle having to fear every day that the Gestapo is going to bust in my door and toss me to the camps. Maybe you could find a legitimate source of income in studying the plant and it's genome, testing, consulting or such if you're willing to put in the time and work to study? As the (black / market) industry booms, there's bound to be money to be made in areas not directly involved in producing illicit / grey area goods?
