I was working on the beach today and all of a sudden this guy came out of the water and made himself at home in a sunny spot protected from the 40 mph. winds . He hung out with me all day about 20 feet away from where I was working. It was nice to have some company. LOL.

Sam. Hydrodynamic, yes. Aerodynamic, No. LOL.
It is a grey seal pup just getting his adult coat. I'd put his weight at about 85-100 lbs.
You can see in the first photo that it is pretty chubby.

Mrs. Ahab says there is no way she would chew the hide until it was soft enough to make me a pair of mukluks. LOL.

Working on a beach? The only folks I've ever seen truly working on a beach were life guards and those delivering food and drinks to hotel guests in Mexico. hehe

I wanted to go pet him but I know he would rip my arm off in no time flat. Those suckers have some serious choppers.

i call them sausage puppies at that age! spent a lot of time working around seals in alaska, sometimes we would get really friendly ones that would get released locally once they were rehabed .so amazing to see them swimming around, one of the local seals was notorious for hitching rides on peoples kayaks when he was a youngster...nothing worse than discovering a seal has been at that king salmon you thought you were about to land though!

Around here they will steal a bass or bluefish right off your line when you are trying to reel it in and they are really good at avoiding the hooks. Oh well, sometimes I feel they have more right to the fish than we do.

they are cool unless your fishing

I guess the local otters just eat mollusks and crayfish. Never had an otter take a bite of my rainbow trout. The water's nice and clear, could shoot otters with Cap's .40.:D

Otters are so cool. I know of a spot where they like to go "sledding" when there is enough snow. It's pretty funny to watch them play.

A sling shot and marbles work as a nonlethal method of dealing with the seals when salmon fishing. at least that the why we used to do it in Waldport. You'll have to google waldport, beautiful but absolutely no work.

beautiful/cute creatures

they really seem defenseless
they arent...it would take 4 determined people to hold down even a little one like that one,two at the very minimum, feeding time was always fun with them even when we had sick ones, once they healed up they would get downright feisty! we would feed them this animal replacement "milk" 86% fat...slap in a feeding tube and inject like a liter of this stuff as quick as you could load another syringe, sure got them fat quick though, then comes the herring smoothies, yum yum!
