Hope one day we'll see some of those skilled Cali Giant growers, growing something like this down the "California Outdoor Standards"

Michoacan Spirit indoors...

pablo nice looking plant . i would love to grow a Mex sativa again. Is that ur own cross? The first plant I grew was a Mex. not sure what part but got from a sack back in early 90's. in my town(central cal) alot of REDBUD (mex brick) would make its way around and I saved some seeds from a nice batch. most of the time it would be subpar but every once in awhile it would be real good. from this seed a grew my first plant. I didnt know much about growing Ijust planted it directly in ground next to a dwarf orange tree. watered once a week , no fert. just plain water the whole time . It practical grew it self . buds turned out great. I was the envy of all my friends . I wish I still had some seeds but lost em. would like 2 run some outdoors this summer.

trinity gold did a cool experiment this last season, i think he ran his supplemental until very late like aug 1st? if im not mistaken. This lead to prolific growth rates for his ladies as they were just itchin to put on the flowers after a wait like that

the above is actually wrong...The lights were ran till July 27..Way too late in the game. The plants were too old. They had been put out in early May ...I heard that about 30% of the garden that the experiment with the lights was done in was heavily infested with Hemp Canker...

I heard TG is going to scrap the lighting all together and start later with younger plants that were rooted and vegged on a 16/8 light time indoors and plant the first week of June..Figure currently you'd want to be rooting and raising donor plants for the various varieties that will populate the garden...Towards the end of April take clones from the donors , early May get them well set in a 1 gallon pot indoors , mid May move to green house in to 2cu ft Black Gold bag, Early June put out in to mounds and step back..

Lol one main key thing i learned from butte about the lights was not to run them to far into the summer :).

Plants will lag in bloom if you run the lights for to long you could end up having to wait until late October/November for the quick stuff to finish :ying:.

Hi Jenn,

I've played with a lot of different soil recipes over the years, 1rst year new soil mixes, as well as yearly additives. Here's a very simple mix that is well proven and I am comfortable recommending for those large outdoor containers. It gives about 50 cubic feet or just over 300 gallons (dry U.S), and fills a 6ft diameter container to a depth of about 18inches - perfectly.

25 bags black gold potting soil (1.5cf ea)

4 bags stutzman farms chicken manure (1 cf ea)

1 bag perlite (4 cf ea)

1 bag (50 lbs) bonemeal (steamed, not precipitated)

1/2 bag gypsum (aprox 1/2 cf) - Edit -> 1/2 of a 40 lb bag (20lbs).

Mix well, water thoroughly, let rest for 2-3 weeks minimum, transplant, and stand back :)

Best Regards,

Tom

Can someone break this down for me? I'm only using 2 bags of potting soil. So 3 cubic ft of soil. How much chicken manure, bone meal, gypsum, etc.. do i add? Thanks. Great looking plants btw.

I can't agree with waiting until end of April to take clones.

Reason 1. I always figure something somewhere might go wrong, so I take clones in March, which leaves me an emergency clone date at the beginning of April if something happens.

reason 2. On average I get roots in 12 to 20 days, depending on the strain, quality of root gel, proper temps, and variables. Cloning at the end of april gives me a transfer date of May 10th into 2 inch pots, or next size for other growers. By this May 10th date, I WANT to have my plants in 3 gal. containers cuz they will be going into the ground in the next 2 weeks.

I use the first couple of weeks in may to bring ladies inside and out, to get them acclimated to the direct sun rays. Usually they spend time under a tree.

Reason 3. Plants have a natural timer built in. If they are in veg too long they will stress, if they are young and switched over to (12/12), it takes them an extra week to realize it's go time, (bud time). I have found clones taken in March have an easier transition from vegging to budding when it's time in (july/august depending on where u live).

Reason 4. Options. Got to have options. By cloning in March, you can get an idea about your plants in april and decide who and how many you want to black box, or just promote in your regular garden. Also, it becomes very apparent if you need better clones of a specific strain sooner rather then later.

No disrespect to anyone, but everyone's growing season is different (length of, and strength of) and getting a jump on the season is the best way to have success at the end.

Peace

April first cuttings for the win. We're dragging the lifespan of these plants out way beyond where they want to be. The younger your plant, the higher her resistance to pathogens.

If you start the plants on April 1st, and you don't suck at cloning (7-11 days in the aerocloner- depending on strain or I toss em as slackers) they will be in their 10 gallon pre-transplant pots by May first. By June first they will be 3-6 feet tall depending on starin. I crowd them in the veg greenhouse so they shoot straight up. I like to put a nice tall plant into the final pots.

Nothing wrong with taking a round of cuts on march first and ten cloning right off them on April first.

Something slow vegging like Master or Bubba might get started March 1st, but anything stretchy and sativa would be a little early.

I'm not saying that growing monsters is impossible if you start M1, just that resistance to pathogens is diminished and in general, older plants are less efficient plants.

If you are only doing 3 cubes of dirt, i would suggest buying a pre mixed dry amendment mix like Age Old dry Grow or, what I use, a mix of dry mixes from Down to Earth Organics. I like the Bio-Fish and Bio-live mixes. Growilla is not bad stuff either.

E.B.Stone has small boxes of similar stuff for cheap. I would bet perfectly fine results side by side with Tom's mix... which is great for larger batches for sure. But it doesn;t make too much sense to go buying huge bags of amendments and using a few pounds total.

resistance to pathogens is diminished based on age?? how did you come to find this true Nomaad??

I would think its more the person taking care of the plant rather then the age.

I gotta take all my cuts for OD 2012 this week. i feel waaay far behind, ill be doin all LVPK she vegs slowwww

I just started my seeds a week ago for a june 1 plant date. Gotta grow them big enough to clone, then sex the clones, take more clones from mothers once sex is determined, get irrigation ready, mix up a batch of supersoil. You guys with the clones are making me feel left behind!

My local nursery has small bags of chicken manure, gypsum, and eb stone bone meal. Think I might do 4 plants. So 6 cft of soil now. lol. Btw, I'll be using eb stone potting soil.

This soil is fantastic as a base for a soil mix. It is all I use. Don't know where you are but it is available at Capitol Nursery in Sacramento. I priced it out last weekend, you can get 10 bags (each bag is twice the volume of the one in the pic) for $89.00.

From my experience with this plant and observation of other living things, I think that many (most?) living organisms go through a life cycle that has a new end and a dead end.

You're right though... I think resistance to pathogens is based on overall plant health. And I think that BOTH age of the plant and the person taking care of it are factors in overall plant health.

I think you will find EB Stones mixes to be inferior to the Black Gold I beleieve Tom started with the year this thread started. But with that mix you could probably use anything.
