Need Silent setup Fan + Carbon

hey all,

I'm looking for the most silent fans around.... this should be on a Secret Jarding DR90 size tent/ custom closet with 400hps & 6" cooltube.

i know a lot about Noise & Acoustics (I'm engineer) so ill do some work here, but none about fans currently on market.
so far i had an unknown in-line fan which was noisy and its time to replace it for text grow..

can anyone recommend 2 fans, with the most quiet operation tech spec (db), ill need one for the cooltube and one for circulating air to the tent.

based on some reading here, I'm planning to buy Mountain Air carbon filter to minimize odor.

money is not an issue on both fans & odor control, if anyone can recommend hi-end quiet setup for a dr90 size room/closet.

thanks ! greeting from Israel ! :ying:

ps- any online shop that ships worldwide with these sutff ..... ? buying stuff in israel is very risky..

i have a 10" can maxx fan that is way quiet compared to other 10 & 12" fans.
i dont have one myself but a good friend has a can muffler at the end of his 10" and the thing is almost whisper quiet.

for your situation id think the can maxx 6" w/ a 6" muffler would have the ability to both cool the tube and exhaust the air in the tent at the same time.

the muffler though is the real key to a more silent operation imo....
incoming>>>>filter>>>>fan>>>>muffler>>>>quiet

and a little insulated ducting will help your cause too.

btw im thinking a 4" fan will be about right for your needs btu i could be wrong.
good luck

yeap, thanks for the suggestions! i think 4" could be enough but 6" will probably be much more quiet considering fewer RPM of the fan. yea ill definitely get a muffler, thanks again ;)
anyone else can join in ?

Speedster fan controller, best thing I ever bought for my fan and also well made and very reliable. :tiphat: It's nice to be able to turn down the speed to whisper quiet levels if needed and still have my scrubber going. Before I had a speed controller it was all or nothing and that really sucks once you can dial it down and have more control. :good:

You want to definitely buy the next biggest fan than you actually need and then just dial down the speed. I find this prolongs the life of the fan too since it does not need to work nearly as hard as one pushed to it's limits. It's kind of like having more horsepower in a car with a V8 and getting from 0 to 60 easier without having to beat on a smaller 4 or 6 cylinder engine to get there. Sure the V8 is bigger and more expensive and uses more gas but it's nice to have the extra power. Much love :canabis:

i dont have a muffler atm hopefully next month ill be able to get it finally but i do have a speedster hooked up. had it runnig for almost a year now. it does the job ok. and i agree with sotf and you (thread op) also about oversizing the fan then cutting down the rpms. it works. and overkill is underrated and you might end up "growing" into a bigger tent where the bigger fan is perfectly sized for it....
but i have to be honest im not really stoked about running the fan at less than what its supposed to run at. i kind of see running electronics at half power as damaging to the electronics... it comes from my guitar amp knowledge... for example take a 100w tube marshall guitar head. 100w is wayyyyy fucking loud. but cranked is where the best distortion tones are. it has 4 output tubes in power section. you can remove a set of tubes (leaving 2) and have the ability to reach the desired gain saturation at a lower overall volume level so not everyone needs sonic ear protection. but the power transformer will blow out sooner.

it will do what you want but there is a potential cost to the gear. it might not happen over night (ive been running with the speedster for a year or so now) but its not the "optimal" way to do things. but i know sometimes its not about optimal so "fuck optimal" hahahaha you just have to do what you need to do, period. good luck

Greyskull - i know what you talking about, i come from the pro audio world as well..

its a different situation here, you amp is not solid state and it runs signal through Tubes, these are designed to be controlled don't worry about that... when you gain low on the tubes you will get more of that creamy sound, when gain and pushed to the max you overload the tube (good thing) and thats when the magic happens.. but you can definitely use lower gain for that cream soft tone.. it all depends on what sound do you need.

now for our topic ! :)

with electric motors its a different story.. its mostly depends on the motor type but you can drive the motor in low voltage and you will never harm it in most cases. its more about the potentiometer you're using. (controller)

so i might go for 8", right now im only growing 3-4 plants but who knows ...

:ying:

thanks all for the suggestion, ill take a look at speedster also :)

still looking for the top brands out there .. and online shops..

S&P inline fans are supposed to be the quietest available. I can tell you dont buy a "Stealth" fan unless you like the sound of a hurricane.

I had a 4" S&P a few years back. It was very quiet for about a year, then the bearings went to shit and it began vibrating and squealing like a siren every time it was powered on.

Luckily I was able to return it to my local shop and get a store credit.

I've heard good things from others about them, so YMMV, but I'll stay away from them personally.

Well shoots you learn something everyday. Thanks for clearing that up.

On a side note whats the difference between a variac and something like a speedster?

make sure you get a VARIAC speed controller for your fans. they cost more money but they truely run your fans at less wattage, the others do not and you can hear it in the motor.
i have one of those "speedsters" as well, its crap. when i use it, the fan makes a much louder noise coming from the motor that can be heard outside the room. the variacs do not do that.
with a 6, the motor noise wasn't that bad, but i got a vortex 8, and holy shit the hum was pretty loud!

if it were me I'd ditch the 6" cool tube it takes up too much room
secondly a single 4" fan would be all you would need if you changed to a 4"air-cooled reflector.
one fan is quieter than two fans.

also check this thread out, it's about the S&P fans mentioned earlier in this thread

dont know why you want two fans. a s&p td-silent series(6 inch),hooked up to a light weight phresh filter or light weight can filter.then 6 inch ducting from fan to your hood.filter your air and cool your hood with one fan.should be light enough to hang from your tent and save 6 cubic feet of growing space.one fan half the noise.

I wouldnt hook a filter to your light fan if it ever gets in the 70s where you live. The filter will reduce airflow and you will need to run your fan full speed.
If your using more than 600 get an 8". I use a speed controller on a 6"exhaust vortex for my room and an 8"maxfan on the light. The maxfan doesn't like my speed control and is fairly loud. I hear their larger fans are quiet compared to others.
I also have a muffler at the wall where the air is drawn into the room. You can't hear much from inside the room the air is being sucked in from

full speed on a td-silent is half the air flow of anything out there, thats one reason its so quite.

if you dont have any budget worries.id use a 1000 watt digital with an 8 inch hood.td-silent 200(8 inches).if it gets hot in the tent id use a 8 inch vortex, for increased air flow.still no need for two fans.

Id get an estimated weight on everything before attempting to hang an 8" filter in a tent. In fact, when I don't connect my 8" to the other room my 4x8 tent gets sucked in real hard. Im sure it would collapse a smaller tent

thanks all for joining in !!!!! that's a huge help :)

so i decited to go the one fan route, if it gets too hot ill add nother small fan, but the ambient temps will be controlled where the tent is .. so i think ill be fine.

6" td silent, 6" phresh with 6" cooltube
variac transformer

thanks you all again.

sunleaves windtunnel 4" with a speedster controller.....................when you turn on the controller and pull down the rpms, the volume of the controller damn near overtook the fan!!.............couldnt/havent used the controller because of the frackin noise

im always skeptical on when someone says a fan is stealth/quiet/etc......my next grow will be based on the extraction, pure and simple, because when i need stealth i need you to be able to stand *close* to the cab/area, with no noise/appliances in the house, and not hear a }}damn thing{{.....havent found that yet

always have to devise some cover noise(humidis, aquarium, constant music)

pc fans are the basterds at the moment....GREAT SIZE for smaller cabs but LOUD unless you get 'stealth' fans.....which have half/third of the pull so ya gotta double/triple up...

are the can fans REALLY that quiet?

Sat.keith, good luck.....seems like procuring a product will be your hurdle......is cannabis that persecuted in israel?

Thanks man, In Israel... yes. any grow op here must be uber stealth. police is trying to get their hands on anything when it comes to cannabis.
security is top priority so i prefer to invest and get it right. :ying:

about the controllers, they must be High-End in order to work properly, i wil l test VARIAC ina few days and let you know. :)

warning on the td-silent.you have to wire it up your self.its can be wired for two speeds low or high.use the high since your hooking it up to a filter.

to wire it up i bought a cheap extension cord, cut the plug end off.screwed it in after striping 1/2 inch of each wire.very easy.

also i would hold off buying a speed controller. you wont need it.
