I think I'm getting more inclined to a semi or full auto box...easy to use...but not as much fun and don't work in all situations.

sorry to sound philosphical AGAIN, but ... Life is Change.

in my opinion none of us is completely separated from ecological destruction even if living as a recluse.

and to show my age I learned to drive in a Willys Whippet. it had a three speed crash box.

good luck wherever you end up!

good one, VOM!

yes, need to say the whippet was MUCH older than me! it was 1928 and I 'm talking about 1964.

hey, and speaking of double-declutching I had a 38 sidevalve ford v8 with no brakes and could get the beast back into 1st gear at 35 miles per hour (remember 'miles'?) without a whisper from the gear box. after the car had slowed on engine compression I 'd use the hand brake to pull up.
in those days the traffic was so light I used to drive it to work that way!

I don't think I would fit in it...might have to turn it into a convertable with the angle grinder.

It's a little bit smaller than my Kenworth.

Just got back from Brisbane...bit of a mission with all the floods in the Moree area. Had to take a big detour. Such is life.

How big was the detour? New England H/way or more inland than that? I wonder how Kangativa and the rest of the crew up there are coping with this rain at this time of year...

I gave the Newell Hwy a miss and did the old coastal run...a bit slower but I just drove during the night so traffic wasn't too bad...clobbered a few roos though. But there is not much point in stopping when hit by 60 tons...I'm not prepared to put a B Double off the road to avoid a roo.

Some people may quietly thank you for disposing of them roos in a quick and humane manner.

If I was in a car I would stop to check for surviving joeys. No point with 60 ton behind you...they are stuffed.

All I worry about is hitting a car.

Eternally vigilant.

Most people expect nothing less than for truckies to be eternally vigilant, but the tin-top drivers need to lift their game a bit. And be better educated/taught before getting the licence.

It's a pity that most car driver have this mentality that even 4 ton pantechs have the handling/braking abilities of a car, let alone a semi of any size, let alone b-doubles/triples. At least having a motorbike licence teaches you perspective. You look EVERYWHERE, you assume that everyone else is deaf, dumb, and stupid. And with some of the sound systems in some cars, they may well be. That was 1 of the 1st things we were taught getting your L's on a bike. And it's saved my bacon more than a few times.

I'm starting to lose count of how many times I've had to point out to people in cars where I'm a passenger the signs some trucks have on the back; "If you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you!"

I think I may have to move to the old stoners pad. Go over there and grouch on the dumb youngsters we have these days. And totally ignore the fact that my generation (1972 vintage here) were just as dumb, but with less tech, powerful cars, and distractions (mobiles) than today.

/End rant/

That;s why I only ride dirt bikes now. KTM 400..nice bike...not a road bike. You cannot trust anyone on the road. At 100 kph a B Double with 60 tons on it takes a long time to stop. If you pull out in front of me less than 200 meters away there is a very good chance you will die. I will not put this vehicle off the road and risk my own neck because of someone's stupidity.

B DOUBLE VS CAR...NSW

The truck driver lived somehow, the rest...............

It's freaking madness what goes on the roads in Oz these days. Please be careful with big trucks. If you hit one you are dead...guaranteed.

Just have a look and use the mirrors...that's what they're there for.

just to balance things up a bit I got a thankyou toot from a b double the other day when I turned left at 90kph 75 meters before the white lines said, onto the bitumenized verge that led to an off ramp, so the truckie behind me didn't have to slow down.

Nice one wilbur...your thinking right and most people do. It's just some idiots out there who stress the fuck out of me.

Luckily I don't get in to road rage...I just shake my head...and say "whatever"...occasionally I call the police and they give them grief.

The big issue with having to slow these things down unexpectedly is getting them back up to speed again...it's no Ferrari. Multiply this a few times and you are behind. This is what causes drivers to fudge logbooks and then it all goes pear shaped.

Wasn't there at one stage (might have been in NSW only, open to correction) where 'shock tactics' like gory accident scenes, ambo's talking to soon-to-be drivers at school were used?

People need to be reminded of the simple points HC mentioned about slowing down times & speeding up times AND the consequences of both. Big rig has to slow down, takes quite a while to gain lost momentum, multiply that by a dozen or many more incidents on any stretch, let alone a whole trip say Melb-Bris, cars insulated from reality (thus no sense of what's going on around them), unrealistic deadlines set by ColesWorths, it's a wonder that anything gets delivered without regular carnage.

One accident is too many of course but i think that us tin top drivers need better training in just being aware of one's surroundings. that's one thing you learn on a bike, trailie or road. That awareness of your own mortality carries over into a car. Most of the time.

P.S. To very oldman. Love the pic of the Willys. Seen a few of those on Mecum Auto Auctions on pay tv.

Gory accident photos aren't enough....you have to see it on the road and in your face.

boils down to awareness. if there's stream of traffic be aware of that and that you're only one part of it.

I hear there are rigs so powerful today they hardly downshift from brisbane to cairns. 700hp? (traffic permitting of course.)

used to love the wail of two stroke gmc's ... and the chuff of magirus deutz' made me laugh because they sounded slower than they were really going!

cheers!

The Kenworth I drive has a 600 hp CAT engine in it.....purrs like a pussy. You always have to downshift and keep the RPM in the right range otherwise it will kangaroo hop all over the place.

Now that I'm in the mood...for those interested..the truck has a computor controlled engine management system, I cannot start it until the computor checks all systems. Then lights flash and she's good to go...you can also get an audio alarm where some hot USA girl says "Gentlemen, start your engine"

It is fitted with Launch Control. So if I have to stop on a hill and potentially roll back....all I have to do is release the clutch and it will accelerate until the next gear change all by itself. It will disengage if you touch the brake or accelerator though.

Driving seat is air suspension and very comfortable. Multiple switches for a wide range of functions are easy to reach. The sleeper cab is large and comfortable.

I have UHF, HF, CB radios and satellite phone and the TV.. Laptop on board and internet access anywhere

3 stage engine brake means all I have to do is select the right gear, switch on the engine brake and never touch the wheel brakse while going down hill...beats cooking the wheel brakes...to easy to miss a gear and get lost in neutral downshifting downhill.

I'm over it....I would rather be at home...like I am now.
