...so how is tom morello NOT considered the best, under all circumstances...he can play anything, and is more creative than any of the other candidates in my opinion. :dunno:

Why does Eric the show of clapton get such a look in on this thread, which is a great thread by the way. Iv chosen Knopfler as my number 1 because of his sublime lead playing which unlike clapton has some melody to it. What makes Knopfler so great is that he uses his fingers which in my opnion is more soulful.

1 Mark Knopfler
2 Jimi Hendrix
3 Robert Johnson
4 sea sick steve
5 Johnnie Greenwood from Radiohead.

My Substitute in case any of them fell ill lol would be the Edge from U2 a very understated player.

Yeah I completely forgot about that man, his a superb player completely different from all the other players iv mentiond.

less can be more ... i always thought david gilmour had that going for him, plus his great sound. phil manzanera had (has?) that too.

I can't limit my list of the best guitarists to 5 players because they were all awesome in there unique ways.
