I got one of these:

wharfedale-diamond-sw150-sub.jpg

But its a bit shit...

Back in uni i had massive floor standing speakers, no subwoofer but a separate bass drive on both speakers...

Two of these:

I long sold that set up and now thinking of either getting a new sub or one of these:

Pioneer 110 watt/channel 7.1 surround receiver. Pioneer 3-way Front (15 in. driver) speakers. Cerwin-Vega center channel speaker. JBL 500 left/right side & rear speakers. Infinity BU-2 120 watt powered sub.

It'll rattle shit off the walls. The 1st 15 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan" sounds incredible. You hear the machine guns in one speaker, the bullets thumping in another. You hear the artillery thump, then hear it travel from one side to the other. Amazing.

Bose 3.1's sweetest speakers i've ever bought & i've been through plenty ! I still have an older set of advent loud speakers that work great for my B channel & a newer cerwin vega center channel .

I'm done with the sattelites & subs .... base reflex are what i'm looking at now :)

I'd have to think about this one a bit to give all the details, but on the quicks I can recommend a good pair of speakers like the ones you are showing, some surround sound, & a separate subwoofer. This is what I have & there are no complaints from me. Have had this setup for years. I favor the Technics & Pioneer brands for home stereos & speakers. The Pioneer stuff made during the '80s & '90s is second to none in quality imo & Technics simply just rock for your home. Cerwin Vegas, Infinity, Bose, & JBL's are great too, but I like to keep it old school with mine. Best products around if you can find them, especially those made during that time period.

Son of Ampzilla/Thaedra/Bose 901's. Love the old stuff. I wanna get me some tubes.

Those are excellent also. That subwoofer kit krunch posted looks like something I'd like to try.

its a rocking subwoofer that will have people just AMAZED at how low it gets, it WILL shake your brain with very low power....

the subwoofer that is mentioned in the article is not available anymore......

the exact replacement is a Polk AudioDB1240, which you can find brand new for $40-60 online....

$50 for subwoofer, $75 for parts and materials, $150 for a 250 watt subwoofer amp = killing most $1000+ subwoofers in sound quality, clarity and all out db's...

im going to be posting a thread, building my new sonotube subwoofer.....

First of all....if you are able to....go out and LISTEN to components. Only your ears can tell you what YOU think sounds good. Use the same disc's for every listening session. Start listening to products above your budget and work your way down till you're in your budget....and it still sounds right. YOU have to live with the system...make sure YOU like the sound.

Speakers are only the end product in a long chain to deliver the sound. The best speakers in the world can't make shit sound good. Your system is only as good as the weakest link. Period.

I still rock and old system. If you buy quality...it will last over 20 years...easily!

Mirage 1295is tower speakers, Adcom 5503 amp for the front end, Rotel RB-991 for the rears. Sota turntable with Jolida tube preamp.
