DIY net cups for small DWC

I love yogurt, so in my switch to a 14g DWC set-up here is what I did....

Use exacto knife carefully and hopefully you cut better than I.....

Get the $1.99 for 6 coco fiber cups. I have a lot hanging around....

Crush it up a little to soften it...

Insert in to cup

I filled them with 40% coco and 60% large perilite. That is what I had around. Hydroton would work, but leave more plastic in the bottom when cutting up cup. Then insert Johnny Blaze X Sweet Blue seedlings. In to the DIY 14g DWC with Crop-King Hydro Gro nutes @ .40 teaspoons per gallon and set PH with sulfuric battery acid to 5.8.

Set rez temp to 66 - 67F.

18 days from seed under 250w Philips 4k CMH and 150w Venture Uni-Form 3.2k Halide on electronic ARO ballast.

Hopefully I will have another one of these.......

Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Regards from Azeotrope.:tiphat:

Thanks LittleA. I used to have huge grows years back and fell in love with organic mixes and coco, so I have tons of coco laying around and coco baskets...... Now it is purely medical in 4.35 square feet for my wife's osteoarthritic spinal stenosis, anxiety and my recent surgeries for old sports injuries. Lots of inspiration on this site that got me thinking.

What? What's wrong with my cups? They were fucking bril.... oh, wait... they really sucked didn't they?

Hope you have better luck than I did. After the above episode I decided actual net cups are too cheap to pass up. Break a stem.

FB and socialist, what do you do after the net pots are 'broken?'

I just started another run using many 3" net pots and now I'm worried they will explode.

The root growth has been in overdrive lately! I left a lot more material on the bottoms of the ones I have in use and that coco basket will help, but I have been looking at them and wondering if I may be headed for some trouble.....LOL The coco and perilite mix is light enough but the plants will be heavy for sure! Thoughts have revolved around picking up some larger cups and modifying before everything is too big.... I have that one girl clone going well now and she is cut from such a stellar plant that I may just run her.... She is in a pool noodle and can be moved in to a single 6" that I have laying around still.

Good point and thanks for bringing it up. One of those things that I do have concerns about. The yogurt cup plastic isn't as brittle as dixie/beer/keg cup plastic, but plants/roots are way powerfull!

in my case, the root system held it all together. Hydroton has billions and billions of tiny holes for roots to grab. She busted her girdle but I don't think I lost more than a pellet or twelve.

Remember, your plant is happy to work with hydroton but has absolutely no need of it. Pellets in DWC are for grower convenience only; To keep the plant from falling in the tub. Should that materialize as a problem, we have ScrOG, trellis, string, plant tape, all kinds-O-cures. Don't worry, be happy.

And now (in honor of the late Paul Harvey) the rest of the story... It held together all the way to the end.

would it work in beer cups if you just cut out the bottom? with no side holes? wouldnt the roots just adjust to growing straight-down?
