The problem with the Drake equation is each assumption is a guess. And then when you plug in percentage chance numbers you are guessing at those. Change 0.01% to 0.0000001% and the result will differ wildly. A 0.01% chance isn't particularly low when you consider all the factors involved in order to obtain a positive result -- 0.01% is highly optimistic.

The Drake equation is a fun thought experiment, but really tells us nothing about actuality.

good post hgo, glad someone spoke up with firsthand experience. i've seen a few things that cannot be explained by conventional science that i truly believe were ufos(since then my mom saw one too!). i just think its a little bit naive to believe we're alone, even here on earth, as wasntme pointed out this shits multidimensional broskis. anyways keep your heads up

i laugh at anyone that thinks we are the only planet in the universe that sustains life...some people have such small minds

That is what some commercial pilots said when calling in that they've seen a UFO.
There is a great doc. where it's mostly pilots discussing them and what the ramifications of reporting them are.

yeah, i dont bring up the ufo thing that often cause usually all i get is programmed responses and sarcastic laughs. times are a changin though, so hopefully everyone can open their mind to some new stuff without having to have a gubbamint approved tv show to back it up.

Dunno about aliens, but I can't believe we are the smartest in the universe. As for the stars, well they sure look pretty in the sky, and I hope I get enjoy them in the future...........

any people interested in astro physics and cosmology should check out the electric universe model and its proponents,,

there is seriously alot of lies surrounding the gravity model as the driving force of the universe,, it isnt its electromagnetism and plasma,,, a great many liars have helped prop up the "principle of uniformity" from newton to the marquis de laplace to charles lyell,, and then darwin and einstein,, all of them conspirators of the principle of uniformity,,

there are no black holes,, they have never been measured or observed,, the sun is not a moltern thermonuclear ball it is a rock covered in plasma cells,, thats why the sun spots are measurably cool despite the fact they are supposed to be a window into a system that has a core temperature of 15 million degrees which is also bollocks,, the sun is the only positive body in our solar system and all the planets feed it with the negative ions streaming towards the sun, that is why the energy received from the sun is so consistant,, also there is no proof for the big bang at all,, but please dont just listen to me and snub what i am saying, if you care about being objective,, look into the alternative (the real) model for the universe,,

one proponent is wal thornhill,, below is the first two parts of a recent lecture at maryland uni

g but 300000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 sounds like an ambiguous figure ascertained by some rambunctious mathematicians/astrophysicists grabbing at numbers with the support of a few flimsy astrophysics/astronomical theories/models/principals .....
:gday:

it does not just sounds like it, it is exactly as you described.

we simply have no knowledge of how many stars are there; so this thread is based on pure assumptions with no point at all except for mental masturbation.

how many planets are there with intelligent life? who knows, surely not we.

Even if there are 3,000 galactic civilizations with the ability to travel intergalactically I would say the chances of them finding us is 0.01%. There is a ton of space out there it would be like finding a needle in 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0 hay stacks.

maybe not...

with our puny tech we can identify over a hundred earthlike planets - we can reach out for dozens of light years. hell, in a hundred years how many?

these numbers are so vast... the probability of ANYTHING approaches 1.0. i wonder how many ICs there are that are just like this one? seriously....

Never claimed otherwise.

Well, it's for mental masturbation in a large group. So let's call it a "Mental Circle Jerk."

Nobody knows anything for sure.

You are aware this post is in the toker's den, right?

Good advice. Thanks!
