Roof snow melting!

your right flir cant see threw walls that are properly insulated with an air gap between the walls thats the same temp as the rest of the house. but if the house is porly insulated the heat sign will glow right threw the wall roof etc. most people dont know that the flir in most the choppers in populated areas has been upgraded to see threw walls and pick up heat signatures due to all the bs thats goin on in the world these days like kidnaping for ransom to name 1. old flir (the 1 they sell to the public) couldnt see threw glass because it would just reflect off it thats not the case anymore with their new flir. just sayin never underestimate the government.

wtf,,, why do you have double threads my friend?????

ima just gonna have to post this on this one too then.. lol

Should have been prepped in the first place if you ask me lol

But sometimes I understand, gotta do what you gotta do lol.

I had a buddy that grow in a straight up OPEN ASS ROOM with NOTHING
but LIGHTS and a FAN.. grew 30 plants in 5 gallon buckets.. YA THEY GOT BIG lol...
he was strapped for cash so he had to do it. Did it.. clean it.. and now its
done with and you'd never notice. :-D

If your gonna do ANYTHING always make sure you dont make the exterior
walls of your home WARM... that is how FLIR is used to fuck you over.
If a room within a room is 100 degree and your exterior walls are same temp as
the outside air.. that 100 degree room WILL NEVER be seen on FLIR..
It isn't XRAY.. its technically on the opposite side of the waves spectrum compared
to XRAY.

Depending on your location, you should be able to judge how important it might
be for you to address the MELTING ROOF... if your in the middle of a neighborhood with newer homes.. then id say big red flag.
If your in a rural area, with older homes... it could just pass as a bad insulated home.
:-D Only you can determine how comfy you want to feel :-D

Do you like piece of mind? I LOVE IT hehe

Adding to my post, ill comment on the above post. I understand even the NEW FLIR tech..

Here is a quick link that I reference to to show you WHERE FLIR aka infared lays
on the scale of WAVES.

http://www.infraredcamerasinc.com/Thermography-FAQ/General-Thermography/Thermography-Faqs.html

* Infrared energy emitted by objects travels at the speed of light which is 186,000 miles per second. Or 300,000 km per second.
* Infrared energy is a form of light and therefore it obeys all the same laws of visible light.

FLIR doenst PENETRATE, all FLIR merely does it detect HEAT SIGNATURES. NOTHING MORE.

Like I said in the upper portion of this post, and like you said yourself my friend,
you gotta have an AIR GAP that that AIR temp should be the temp of your entire house living
area.. aka 65-73 degrees 'F

SO.. again.. you can have a GLOWING RED HOT block of steel WITHIN a air tight room which
is located within another room. the SPACE between the room holding the HOT STEEL
and your exterior wall can now be easily exchanged to assure its temp is right. That air would
then make the exterior walls of the house reflect the same temp as else where in the house.

Its all about HOT SPOTS.. thats it really, just prevent the OUTER walls of your home
from heating up and your golden, thats simple :-D and dont say it isnt lol ;-)

cheers

Your cheapest option would be to buy 2-3 shovels and leave them on the roof with some other work material, this way it just looks like you went on the roof and shoveled it off yourself, if the LL ask tell him you thought you were helping him out because you didn't want anything bad to happen to his roof, this will probably give him less reason to poke around because he know thinks your taking care of his place rather than trashin it, in the mean time work on venting all the hot air elsewhere, if you got a chimeny that be ideal, best of luck....

Insulate better. It's probably not enough to be suspicious on it's own, provided that there are other homes in your are with no snow. But in conjunction with other warning signs it may get you reported.

Why not scrub the air and vent it back into your house / central air system?
Saves you cash on the heating bill, and solves your problem. Even in your house is poorly insulated, and FLIR is able to penetrate your walls to some degree, it would simply appear as if the inside of your home is heated, just like every other home on your block.

i wrote a response this morning but its not here

if your air is scrubbed well enough reduce your heat bill by defusing the exhaust through the house

you can also route the exghaust into a room and vetn heat out a window

Do you see the home heating ducts in the pics posted by joe fresh?

A FLIR cam cannot see specific objects behind a wall. What FLIR sees is gradient temperature differences along a surface. Like if you have 70% of your roof 5 degrees and then where the hot air hits the roof you have a big patch of 80 degree surface temp. This hot spot would glow bright and stick out like a sore thumb next to the other parts of the cold roof.

A FLIR isnt going to see a warm duct just like it wouldnt see my warm body if I was sitting in the attic.

Some heat isnt a bad thing, not like if you have no snow on your roof anyone driving by can see that and someone might get suspicious.

If your house looks 100% normal and ordinary on the outside to the naked eye you should be all set. It's not til someone sees something that raises suspicion that they are going to bust out the FLIR and look a little closer. Properly contain your heat inside and you shouldnt have any issues. It's not like your dealing with the CIA, they're not using x ray vision.

Just vent your heat back into the house and be done with it.

Thanks for all the help guys!

To clarify, the room itself is in the attic. And the attic isn't so much an attic as it is a top floor with slanted apex type roof. I used panda paper throughout so it is like a tent within the room. There's also a small lung area, where I have a heater to warm the cold air coming through the window. I don't want to exhaust out the window because it will be steam coming out of a window which is the biggest red flag.

I'm going to insulate the room and work from there. Thanks again guys.

If you have no snow on your roof when everyone else does, all they have to do is to look into your electricity use, scan you with FLIR, drop by and 'smell' cannabis for probable cause etc! This does happen, I know people that have got busted because of melted snow!

if they went to everyones house that dosent have snow on the roof would be a total waste of time and pending lawsuits from people that are searched without any reason but the reasoning of "u dont have snow on your roof so we got a warrant to search your house". your landlord would be your biggest threat if they dont know about your op and would want to come in and fix the "Problem". if u have a dog put the grow in a room and put the "vicious" dog in the room when the landlord is there and they wont enter the room therefore they wont be able to see the op. if thats too much work as someone else said exaust the hot scrubbed air into another room of the house and that will help with ur heating bill in return if its hot enough to melt all the snow off ur roof.

As fast as a watched pot of water waiting to boil. Once your looked at there's nothing anyone can really do but pack up and leave but id say one wouldn't even know it was coming.

How about this, take the hole where you vent into the attic, run a long length of ducting in a loop in the attic then reconnect it to the same room. So the air goes into the duct loop on one end hot, gets cooled by the cold ass attic then comes back in in another port cooled.

No direct blast of hot air to the attic so it shouldn't melt the snow, shouldnt raise the temp any more than a normal heating duct would.

I HAVE DONE THIS.
Works really well.
Use aluminum stretch duct, and make provisions for the water that will condense in the tube.

How long would it take to get a warrant based only on the lack of snow, electricity use, and FLIR results?
They'd probably need a warrant to get the electricity use. In canada they'd probably need it for FLIR too.

I would be more worried about smell and garbage and stuff. Light leaks too.

The condensation would worry me as much as the wet roof , if they drink twenty litres a day most of that could be running down the walls when it gets really cold.

The wood is doubtless treated with some preservatives but serious risk of allowing fungus to take hold , can move fast and quickly spread down into studding walls and timber frames causeing huge expense.

Learnt this the hard way , cost me a roof after four years of venting into the attic, and a very awkward insurance claim.

Tapping into an existing chimney or flue system is good cover for smell and heat and can usually be reinstated neatly , watch out for condensation running back when the stove/boiler is not running.

This condensation cost me a kitchen ceiling due to runnng back down when the fire was out , and an even more dodgy clam after two years.
