Roof snow melting!

The rest of the neighbourhood has snow on their roofs and ours doesn't... Is it a big problem? Is the lack of snow enough to warrant a warrant? Or even enough cause to simply raise suspicion? Can my landlord enter based on the lack of snow?

And how should I go about fixing it, if it indeed is a serious problem?

I've thought of these but am open to any suggestions:

- Insulate the roof better... we don't really have height restrictions so we could get some nice thick stuff up there.
- Really late at night, hose our neighbours' roofs with warm water to get rid of their snow.
- Move the whole op downstairs to a different bedroom. (Huge pain in the ass)
- Cut vents in the roof. (Causing permanent decision)

Thanks!

Don't cut vents in roof, the snow will then melt down those vents?

I like the second idea though lol.

Bwhahaha! this is the worst part of venting into the attic.

I dealt with this issue a few winters ago, I was paranoid as fuck and was almost to the point of shoveling snow back onto the roof.

To get some piece of mind I drove around the area and looked at peoples roofs, some had snow, some didnt. I chalk it up to houses with poorly insulated attics and leaking heating systems had no snow, I doubt all of the people had grows on their second floor.

It is more obvious to you because you are a grower, I dont know if the average person is inspecting how much snow is on the roof of houses, but piece of mind is priceless. I dont think they can get a warrant for that, but the LL might ask to enter if he feels his house is leaking heat like a sieve and he might want to fix it.

They are really pushing this boosting of homes energy efficiency lately so people are paying more attention to this sort of thing.

Venting into the attic in the winter is also shitty because it can cause mold to grow, the constant high humidity and condensation can destroy things in a hurry.

Another thing to consider is venting outside is very suspicious and can lead to busts because you have a suspiciously placed vent blowing hot air with a steam cloud going 24-7. If you watch the pigs FLIR videos they always find grows by hot air blowing out of weird places.

I am originally from Northern Michigan, and this is what a lot of the growers up there will do: simply vent all that heat that you are generating with those lights back into a living area of you home(if you are running your exhaust through a carbon filter that is). Also spending the couple bucks to add some extra insulation might be a good idea too(if not just to mask the fact that you are growing, it will lower your heating bill too!).

Ok, you guys have relieved my main concern of police suspicion. However, my landlord seems like the kind of guy that would notice and want to make it more efficient... Could I just tell him that since we pay hydro, it should be up to us? And that he can insulate the attic better once we move out?

This sucks!

YES, massive clusterfucking problem. You better get something sorted out asap or your putting yourself up for a shitstorm that wont be pretty! I know people that have got busted for melted snow and from that my grows have been modified so that won't happen. I don't know what you can do but you gotta do something because LEO are trained to look out for this. Venting into the attic is not the way to go, sort it.

if they went to everyones house that dosent have snow on the roof would be a total waste of time and pending lawsuits from people that are searched without any reason but the reasoning of "u dont have snow on your roof so we got a warrant to search your house". your landlord would be your biggest threat if they dont know about your op and would want to come in and fix the "Problem". if u have a dog put the grow in a room and put the "vicious" dog in the room when the landlord is there and they wont enter the room therefore they wont be able to see the op. if thats too much work as someone else said exaust the hot scrubbed air into another room of the house and that will help with ur heating bill in return if its hot enough to melt all the snow off ur roof.

the melted snow will just tell them to look harder. i.e. take out the flir and scan ur house for anything out of the ordinary before they search. like the hotspot of ur exaust only hittin 1 spot and heating that spot while the rest of the attic is cooler even though the snow is melted on the entire roof. exaust into a chiminey or furnace exaust where heat is suposed to be comming from.

A lot of it depends on where you live as to how much attention it will draw. Where I am, it is cold enough and we get enough snow (at least in normal winters) that even an uninsulated house has snow on the roof - drive through your neighborhood and see what the other houses look like. Personally, I would keep the heat in the living space and get a big enough carbon filter to take care of any smell. If you vent the lights separately from the room air changes, that will lessen your need for the carbon filter.

*edit* I went back and re-read your post. If none of your neighbors have a bare roof and you do, it is indeed a problem.

i wanna say hose your neighbors roofs down with hot water, just to hear how that go's... but yeah, i would vent it out a window/ vent/ anywhere that is kinda hidden as you dont want to go from no snow on roof to looking like you always have your drier on. maybe even try venting into a room in the house that doesn't get as much heat from the furnace... thats what i would do.. make sure you got a good filter on so there is no smell and vent into a cold room... or move it into the basement... i dont personally know anyone that has ever been busted by not having snow on the roof... but i would for sure think that if i seen only 1 house on a block without snow, it would look funny..

oh and i forgot to say, dont cut holes in the roof. 2 reason.. 1 you are going to have the hot air going up threw the vents and then you will see the heat pouring out from the street...
2 you said something about a landlord meaning you rent... so then that means you will be cutting holes in someone else's house.. and if not properly done, you could just cause more water damage..
