Gday folks.

Perhaps you can help me with a small issue that may or maybe not a problem.

AVG keeps popping up this box that is telling me firefox is using too much memory. Its usually around 300MB or there abouts... it says i should close the program and restart it.

Is this a normal amount of memory for surfing the web only? :tiphat:

It's not a malware. Firefox is bad to leak memory. Open the task window and watch it suck while idling, lol. Closing the program is bullocks but it's better than crashing.

I get that error occasionally, usually when I have more than 4 tabs open. I run win7 on an archos tablet, which only has 1 gig of ram.
Unless firefox is responding slowly dont worry, if not restart firefox. Works for me

I used to get that when I had AVG, I have avast now and it never happens.

Dump avg and get avast.

another good thing about avast is this hot chick voice comes on and tells you when it is updated, its very nice to listen to.

my computer runs much smoother now without avg.

Avast free? I am not familiar with that anti-virus program. I was using Trend Micro Titanium Edition but the trial version that came with my notebook expired.

Thanks guys.

I used to have avast but it ran out. I generally switch between avg and avast every year or so.

Yeah that chicks voice is kinda hot... :smoke:

i prefer free avast regardless but clear your mozilla cache

might have some nastiness in it

also super anti spyware is your friend

AVG has made my computer crash every time I've tried to use it. Avast is good, I use the free trial when I have issues.

Hey SilverSurfer OG,

try this...Firefox drop down menu -> options -> options -> Advanced -> network -> check mark "override automatic cache management" -> set "Limit cache to 0 MB" -> click OK.

no cache = no problems

Avast and AVG free are poor anti-malware solutions IMHprofessionalO. Avast is a resource hog, AVG as well. Avast is a little better at catching nasties tho. I would rather just run Malwarebytes once a day before slowing my PC to a stand still with those two free programs, I've made a lot of money restoring people's systems who have trusted free AVG or Avast.

Avira Anti-vir free is a decent free program... but if your doing any online banking or have any Govn't secrets on your box, I would try eset nod32. it's lightweight and it works good.

You can get the 30 day trial from their website and when that runs out just google "eset nod32 username and password" for 3 pages of sites offering 30-40-90 day credentials. I've used eset for free for about 3 years now.

Hope this helps...

Dump that AVG shite and get avast bruz and make sure you have firefox up-to-date, click Help on firefox then About Firefox and that will update you or tell you to update.
Also if your running more than 4 open tabs in firefox then you will churn 300-400 Mb easy
I had heaps of issues with AVG after years of using it, haven't had a issue since switching to avast :good:

Not trying to sound like a dick, but a professional would never say avast is a resource hog!

If you worked on a computer that was slow with avast installed after it was cleaned up, the avast install was corrupt, the hard drive is bad, or the system has a rootkit! I have plenty of business clients still running p4 xp computers with 512 ram and avast pro, not to mention countless home users with the free version. There is minimal difference between no av protection and avast.

Here is some fact!

An anti virus/security suite isn't a fool proof way to safeguard your machine, it's only one piece to the solution and is defeatable regardless of what brand it is. Avira is junk, it's good at detection after your infected, it's right there with Norton always telling you how it saved your ass, but never gets rid of the problem. Avira can't even rid a simple tssd infection, but it does do a good job of telling you how it did every 2 minutes.

Nod32 is a good paid av but is in no way lighter on resources or your wallet then avast free.

Use a router with spi firewall, keep your Windows, Flash Player, Java, and other programs up to date, do weekly scans with Malwarebytes, use Open DNS as your dns servers, and do an occasional -->>boot time<<-- scan with avast, the above along with sensible browsing habits will keep the most people's computers safe.

Peace
GFI

Edit: Also professionals don't encourage software piracy, or do they use it on their own systems. If your a professional you can afford the $50 a year for an av.

The cache has nothing to do with Firefox being a RAM hog.

Superantispyware (free edition), Microsoft Security Essentials...don't need anything else and both are free unless you upgrade the S.A.S.

If you are okay with dropping a couple of bucks, I would personally recommend NOD32 Professional and Superantispyware Pro, or just go with the entire ESET (makers of NOD32) security suite.

Don't buy into the registry optimizers, they cause more problems then they fix.

For a home user I'd recommend "ccleaner" it's a good safe temp file cleaner with the ability to remove unneeded registry keys, disable startup programs, and you can also uninstall programs from it...same as "Add and Remove" in xp or "Programs and Features" in Vista/7. If you decide to use the registry cleaner part of it be sure to back up any changes you make to the registry in case you have an issue.

Myself I use a program called "Temp File Cleaner", you will need to have Java Runtime Enviroment to use it (which should already be installed on your computer) and it's more of an advanced cleaning tool, but it's great if you have multiple accounts on your computer. You can find it at addpcs.com

Peace GFI

And just to clear up any confusion about avast.... avast pro is the one that has the 30 day trial, avast free is free for home use and only requires an email address and name in the program to register it once a year. The only difference is features.

Anti virus software is not a 100% safeguard, a lot of virus' are encrypted so the AV doesn't recognize it scantime and runtime, so it can install onto your computer potentially giving the hacker access to your webcam, microphone, all computer files, key logs, passwords, etc.
