Increasingly Ridiculous Enhanced Red Spectrum 700w+ CFL Array / MODSCROG

Hey all,

My cab is a 3x3 space with just under 800w of CFL arranged over it. I use a design I call "spiders" which are single gang 5 hole round electrical boxes connected to 4 weather resistant lamp holders. The box allows the entire unit to be self contained, and affords the lights a place to screw into. Simply hook the wires up to a plug and a power strip. With this configuration, I can easily (and adjustably) manage up to 92w per square foot (6400 lumens per spider) with cheapie 23w CFLs.

My array has a mix of 5000k / 3500k / 2700k bulbs, with several additional 23w red CFLs mixed in as well. The red doesn't put out much light, but I feel it better pumps up the red spectrum.

I've found that 50w per sqft will be very effective for veg, 75watts+ per sqft (100w preferred) for flower.

Cooling is provided by a box fan, on low. In veg, I use an 8 inch desk fan on med. The screens are tomato cages, cut in half. The lower half I use for training in veg, upper half with a screen for flower.

My old 3 light setup:

Downsides to the 3 light - middle light is mounted in the center, meaning it hangs lower than the outside two - works well for lower wattage colored bulbs, but not much else. Also, the maximum brightness per unit is 69w (23x3).

Lots of people ask why CFL over HPS. My answer is simple, no heat and cheap to work with. As far as I'm concerned, there is no real difference between HPS / CFL, though I'm told CFL puts out more UV (especially that close to the bulb), so theoretically the potential is there for higher THC levels - but worrying about the 1-2% increase in possible potency is an absolute waste of time. I will say that when compared to offerings at collectives (I'm a CA medical patient) I am routinely disappointed at commercially grown potency.

The obvious downside to CFL is the lack of penetration and the fact that when scaled up, its nuts. For flower, your working with a ball of light the size of a volleyball in terms of effective penetration. And I mean...REALLY?? 35..40 bulbs for a 3x3? Anyhow, that said, I'll be logging my micro setup here.

I look forward to everyone jumping in!

Thank you all for the nice words!

I do not have a pic of the outside of the cab (its actually a closet wrapped in mylar) - but basically, imagine a sheet of plywood wrapped in mylar with 3 plugs wired off the fixtures. (helps divide the wattage up a bit) The piece of plywood has 4 chains attached so I can lower and raise the lights - which comes in handy when I run pure equatorial sativas/hazes.

In terms of yield, I'm still perfecting soil recipes, but my Tom Hill Haze had to have been over 3oz and the Poison Skunk is shaping up to be a bit more than that. So to be safe, if I went for yield and not perpetual diversity, 3oz x 4 plants = 12oz. By perpetual diversity, I rarely run the same thing twice, which cuts down on dialing the last 5% which also hampers the yields.

Hey all - some more shots from the CFL mini-forest.

Poison Skunk (durban poison x skunk 1) needs a few more weeks. Smells like black licorice and skunk mixed. When smoked, the lowers leave a flavor residue in your upper lungs / throat similar to menthol cigarettes, which is a perfect way to describe the flavor - this strain tastes like black licorice menthol kools.

Napalm #2 (destroyer-ish leaning pheno) is just starting.

Holy Grail is very mom looking but smells like a perfect 50/50 mix of its parents, Harlequin's chocolate-ish smell and Destroyer's lemon-pepper with hints of rubber and fuel.

Hawaiian Snow smells like caramel and "haze green-ness"

It looks like my Flo beans are going to put on a hell of a show. Flo 2/3/4 are purple stemmed with green leaves, but Flo #1's leaves purple in veg - awesome.:dance013:

Sam Skunkman's super strong smelling Poison Skunk (durban poison x skunk 1) came down today, despite still having a few live foxtails here and there. Best size/density from the CFLs yet.

Nice I hadn't found this thread before Terpene,

I'm glad I did
Great cab, great plants showcased by a great camera!
I might order some of those red bulbs online, your nugs CFL at it's best!
Great job

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I'm actually getting ready for my big redesign to what I call a "rack" system. Basically, it's a 2x3 industrial storage shelf. I will soon have 2 2x3 spaces, one for early flower which will be more white CFLs on top, and the bottom will be for later flower which will be enhanced red color spectrum. Lighting intensity will jump to 600watts per level using my spiders. Like I said, increasingly ridiculous.

The passive heat from the lower level's CFLs will also be directed around the bases of the incoming top pots. Warm roots encourage little plants to grow, why can't I do the same with big plants? Another reason the younger plants are up top - the stretch naturally occurs through August-September, meaning they're expecting heat during this period, as the season progresses, the heat diminishes, and they get moved to the bottom shelf. We'll see if my planning works out, but my lower back cannot wait for the bending way over with 50lbs of soil to stop.

What are you expecting this harvest to yield?

Well, generally I'm pulling about 2.5oz per plant because I like running equatorial sativas. The poison skunk is probably 3-3.25.

I've been self sufficient for about 3.5 years now, (CA medical patient) I'm running a perpetual and rarely ever run the same thing twice, so that tends to cut down on the yields a bit, but about every 3 weeks one bites the dust and another replaces it.
