Vacuum Purge question

Hey guys I've been really interested in this vacuum purging thing lately but every system I've looked at is too expensive for my blood right now. I've been watching some vids online one of a guy using a hand pump

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAD4C1G0thg&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

im wondering what you guys think of that idea would it work good?

also I was looking at this

http://www.sears.ca/product/sunbeam...with-accessories/611-000267815-FSFRSH0055-033

wondering if you think that would work too?

thanks for your help guys..

I got one like this at harbor freight for thirty bucks
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAKE-BLEED...S-/270765276501?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=
I use it with a food saver jar kinda like the one that guy in the video uses.
I can get it up to 25hg, but from what I read on here 29hg is the sweet spot. With a smaller and stronger container I could probably get lower. My setup works ok for small to medium amounts. I am currently trying to get my hands on a better setup, like $400 to $500 price range.
The one in the link is interesting I wonder how strong it is?

whats 25hg and 29hg mean?

Its a unit of measure for vacuum. Hg is symbol on the periodic table for mercury and they used to use mercury to measure atmospheric pressure and I guess it stuck. 29.92 Hg = 14.696psi

What Hama said. It is how high the pressure differential will raise a column of mercury. In this case 25 or 29 inches.

Sometimes water column is used instead of mercury, usually expressed in inches of water column or feet of head.

Hey Greywolf,
I found a Chapman water aspirator on e-Bay that claims a 29.5 hg @ 30 psi water pressure that also has a check valve to eliminate a water trap (probably called something else that I can't remember). This would work on a Buchner filter and flask, as per our filtering conversation on the moldy bud thread, but could it also be effective to use on a desiccating jar to purge the evaporated concentrate? Is that enough vacuum to be useful @ room temperature?

And another dumb question...Couldn't you put an inline pressure gauge with a ball valve shut-off to close /hold the desired / maximum pressure and then turn off the water?
Would a low end jar hold vacuum for ? minutes /hours it would take to purge solvent?
I got as far as the 1 in Chemistry 101 so even the most basic principles of how this works are new to me.
But I'm learning all the time with a little help from my friends...

Y'all have a Merry Christmas and pick up your new toys when you're done playing with em.

Yes, 29.5" Hg vacuum will work fine for the desiccator.

No, the water must continue to flow to maintain vacuum, because out gassing from boiling will raise the pressure again.

I have never imploded a canning jar, but no guarantees.

Ya'll have a Merry Christmas as well!

Okay,
That makes sense that a constant vacuum must be held. Guess I should have known that but for some of us this alchemy is still 2 steps away from magic.
Very sweet setup, I never thought about using a canning jar with a vac head. Too easy.
I imagine a pump that won't fail because of volatile vapors in solvents are pretty expensive so a water aspirator will work okay for small batches, right?
Heat water/ oil bath with jar under vacuum til bubbles disappear and you're done, is that correct?

Another question, if I may, kind sir. Could I take fresh, undried trim, bud and decarb in oven @ 252 F. for 27 minutes and extract w/ iso/ ethenol for edibles and tinctures or would the result be less than ideal taste-wise compared to cured herb?
I get jump's fresh amber process, but how would you go about decarbing for edibles?

Wifey cannot/ will not smoke (can't tolerate it) and I'd like to see if I can ween her off the bunch of pills they have her on for fibromyalgia.

We need to get greywolf to write the clean oil bible for the scientifically impaired. An IC Mag bestseller.
I'd love to see a literary agent shop that textbook to Houghton-Mifflin

damn, i like this idea, and love that its a hand pump. one of my vacuum sealers came with a similar kit, but instead of being hand operated, a tube connects it to the sealer and it sucks it out. always been hesitant to use. in my head, i could see me pushing the button, and BBOOOOMM!!

Im sorry about your wife! Yes,your oven decarb technique will do the trick. Just as a side note though, fresh, uncured dried (4-6 days) will always make the tastiest oil. Curing the bud just releases the terps so you want to run the weed as soon as possible so you can get them into the solvent and into your oil. Also Jumps thread and a few of GW's threads/ posts talk about decarboxylation techniques, you can also do it to your end product, meaning decarb the oil. Note that these temperatures do tend to rid the oil of all smell/ taste though, as they are used more for edibles.

Yes, a water aspirator will work OK for small batches. It does use a lot of water, so if you use one on large batches, you probably want to add a pump and recirculation tank.

I decarboxylate after I have extracted the oil and purged the solvents. I use a fondue pot of 250F Canola oil for that purpose. I keep canning jar lid rings on the bottom for containers to set on, so that they are isolated from the bottom.

I put the cannabis oil in a Pyrex beaker or a stainless cup and set that in the hot oil bath. The first thing to boil off will be any remaining solvent, in the form of larger non-uniform bubbles, and then a barrage of tiny equally sized CO2 bubbles from decarboxylation.

The optimum THC levels are achieved at 70% decarboxylation and at about that point, the small bubbles will suddenly drop off dramatically, though continuing at a much slower rate. I remove most of my oil at that point, but if I want a couch locking sleepy med, I cook it until there are no bubbles, to drive up the CBN levels.

but if I want a couch locking sleepy med, I cook it until there are no bubbles, to drive up the CBN levels.

interestingly, the most effective sleep med i have made comes from recaptured oil, from the condensation on glass wells and bubbler. re condenced cannabinoids seem to be much more sedative then those that are cooked off in an oil bath. i have even let them cook for longer then quiescence to simulate condensed, but no luck so far.

right now i am helping a patient detox from opiates with condensed vaporized oils. it is the only thing that helps him function during the day and sleep at night. i don't have any white widow sleep meds right now for him to try so cannot do a side by side till after the new year.

Damn, really? I have so much of that stuff, i keep claiming it with alcohol and saving it. Not sure why until now. It tastes like shit on the ti. I guess I'll have to make brownies.

ES, would you happen to know how much of this reclaim would be good for one batch of 9 brownies , I like edibles extremely potent. If I were using bho I would want at least a gram per.
White widow for sleep meds? You must have a dif cut than me, my widow is very racy, cerebreal, talkative high, almost full sativa. GDP is my sleep meds.
