Why do mason jars RUIN my buds???

i dry the whole plant or large branches for like 5 days or till when i bend one of the bud branches and it cracks or breaks clean, im talking near the top of the plant not just the stuff near the bottom. plant dries from bottom up even if you hang dry. if the stems are dry enough i cut the buds from the stems and place in jars. if i start cutting and i find its still not dry i will put the buds in a paper bag and seal for a couple more days. by then they are smoke dry and ready for a cure.

now they are dry enough to smoke all but the stems and the densest bud, its not gonna be good smoke but it will be dry enough to go all the way to asj and not have a bunch of black residue from me trying to smoke wet plants. this is when i put them in a jar and start burping once a day. you open jar it is all foggy and moist looking on the inside, you air it our like 15-20 minutes, close jar. wait another day or two, repeat.

it will smell like hay and wet grass no worries, its supposed to smell like that. after about a week of this you will notice the jar isnt that moist when you open it, now we only need to open once every couple of days. i heard someone say sweating, yeah thats what we're doing. everytime you close the jar tight the moisture in the buds evaporates out but since its a vacuum it wont go anywhere, it will just stay in the jars. were you to not air it out and release this moist air your buds would quickly rot and mold.

anyway after 2-3 weeks you only need to open the jar like once a week, it is at this point where we are smoke cured and the weed is about as good as it will ever be smell wise and tastewise. it will probably still be a little moist in the jar but smokeable moist if you leave it out a little while like 10 minutes it will turn crispy dry. after this point you may store your weed long term and not worry about mold because the moisture content at this point is just enough to keep the weed. when you open your jars from now on you will only smell sweet delicious funk, and if you leave your weed jar open your weed will quickly turn to stone. what i mean is the moisture left will quickly evaporate and your weed will become dry and brittle, at least thats my experience.

i wonder why this is not always the case here

most of the time i have weed that gets to a perfect point and when i open the jar it reeks very strong and delicious

and then sometimes after opening it a few times smells become much much less strong and also taste becomes less nice

Not all jars have this and i am clueless as to why this happens, some herbs just keep smelling betetr and better and some kinda lose their magic

Up to now freezing still seems to work best for me

How are you drying it?

I put weed in jars once the stems snap. However, the jars still have to be burped, as mentioned above.

Im' doign everything as explained on the first page letter per letter

but i also am thinking 65% is too high to keep them closed for a week

I agree with the masses here. Get a hygrometer and check because it is the only way you will know for sure. Often times it takes 24 hrs for things to stabilize inside the jar. I find the best case scenario is achieving fully dry prior to jarring, but in order to get there your buds will seem ruined from being too dry. Then after about 24 hrs they are love. I then simply burp the jars until they smell right then seal them up for good. If they are still above my RH goal, which they most often are, I will dry further either in the jars or in a paper bag.

I typically shoot for a RH of 62 and find that a RH in the low to mid 60's provides a good balance between perfect for a dube and perfect for a bowl. Keep in mind though, that RH is RELATIVE humidity and there are other factors that affect that reading. Inside (jar) vs outside temps for one thing but there is also going to be variance between hygrometers. My suggestion for purchasing one is to buy one locally where you can see a dozen or so on the shelves and see their readings. Then you can pick a unit that is displaying the most common readings in an effort to get one that is properly calibrated.

Too wet and a j won't stay lit and too dry and you need to put a screen in your sweet glass pipe.

Jars are the last step of curing for me,and one that makes me keep sticking my nose in the jar because i cant stop smelling certain strains.First i dry my bud until it is pretty dry,the stems should crack but not be so dry they are brittle. Then before it goes in jars,i throw them in a paper grocery bag for a couple days.Ill roll the top up at night and every mornin ill open it up and toss it all with my hands and leave the bag open. After that,i then put them in the jars were they stay in my closet where its dark n semi cool, not cold.I open the jar a few times a day, shake around the buds and stick my sniffer in there cuz the smell is soooo good. They stay in the jar forever and if i dont smoke it all up in a damn day, they can keep curing and getting better every day.Longer the cure, the better a bud can get.Its weird to me that a bud curing at day 15 thats really good, will keep getting better and knock yer head off at day 35.Peace and Stay Safe,DancesWithWeed:wave:

i burp my jars every few hours during the first few weeks and then after a while some will sit a few days without opening..

I burp them once per week. Then like once per month. Then whenever I feel like smelling them.

I dry my buds until there 55-60%RH. Then place them into jars. The RH does not increase so I dont burp the Jar. Every Time you burp it lets the moisture out i dont want the RH% to drop below 55%. Im assuming that people that burp put buds that are above 70% RH in the jar..?? I leave it like that or 4 weeks. Works fine smells great tastes great..

I think different strains are getting the best of everyone.

for me (White Russian) I've been growing it or 4 years and drying and curing still is the hardest thing to master.

I dry at 60%rh @ 25oC for 5-7 days till stem cracks then put in buckets and toss for 2 weeks then Jar up.

I'm not a W.R fan so I've quit it and I'm ready to move on to something Kushy

The grassY smell does come from improper curing and drying. If you hang dry in a place that is too low RH then the bud dries too fast and the smell often ends up being like hay. Curing can remove some of that smell. I also find that it depends on how much leaf matter is in the bud.. or how much is left on the bud. A poor trim makes for a greener grassier smell. There is no doubt about it, freshly dries bud doesn't smell that good. It should only take a few weeks for a decent cure..... but curing for 8 hrs is a joke right. The explanations are all correct. That bud just oozed moisture from the stem into the jar and remoistened the bud up.

Look at how much time and effort is being described by these patient growers on this thread. Obviously what most "patients" (hahhahahaha) get is not exactly the best of the best even if it looks like it came out of High Times. Most people are happy with the "top notch" or whatever "amazing" smoke they buy, so why spend time on things people wouldn't understand?

Right on skullz. Curing CAN remove some of the grassy smell, but not if the bud is dried too quickly and thoroughly.

rash: white russian takes a long cure, imo. its probably one of the best examples I know of a weed that goes from grassy to sweet if given a long slow cure. I don't run her anymore, but found she did better outside than in for me.

As for cure length.... 75 days is about right for me. After that, potency seems to be affected.

i don't know about the trimming thing. best cure I ever achieved was almost untrimmed weed. wound up being superior for rolling joints if you just ground it all up together.
