Why do mason jars RUIN my buds???

I've done some extensive searching, and I've found nobody else who has the same problem. Any bud that I try to store in mason jars or any other airtight jar will go bad on me WITHIN HOURS.

What happens is that the taste and smell of the bud changes, and it won't smoke the same. If I try to store for a couple of days in jars, it will literally not burn as well. The ash will be black instead of white, the taste will be way off, and the high feels off. I'm talking about excellent quality bud prior to going into the jars.

I thought maybe mold was growing, but this bud is properly dry before going in, and I don't see anything suspicious growing on it. I've also tried airtight plastic containers (tightpacs). Bud will last about 24 hours in those before the same thing happens. Could it still be mold, or bacterial? Something in my home that I can't see?

Anyone ever run into this problem??? What can I do?

I would have to agree with the part about it not being the jars. So many folks use them successfully, hard to blame the jar. Less of course you are using pickle jars or something. Good luck. Peace GS

ps. does it smell like ammonia?

Well, the smell and taste become sort of grassy at first compared to when it went in the jar, but then after a couple of days, it doesn't even taste like bud anymore. Almost like a chemical taste. But the most obvious difference is just that it won't burn the same.

But no, it doesn't really smell like ammonia, if you're talking about that cat pee smell that bud gets when it goes bad. This is not like that.

i'm thinking it's a definitional issue with 'properly dry' & 'excellent quality'. too wet.

ziplock bag on the counter overnight have the same result?

or is it only the (moreso) airtight containers?

what happens if you just leave a nug on top of the jar and some in the jar? the stuff inside goes bad while the nug on top just gets drier?

are the jars clean? not just wiped down, but dishwashing machine sanitized?

Sounds like the weed isn't dry enough for jars... the "grassy" smell will go away as the buds dry further....:D

you're herb should be mostly "cured" before placeing them in jars...
uncured herb changes it's smell and taste profile early and often during
the cureing process
i hang dry my herb and use hygrometers and cookie jars to cure my herb

okay multiple posts since I typed mine out,

yeah they aren't dry all the way through, they SEEM dry on the outside, perfectly smokable dry, however the inner parts still have moisture and by sealing it in a jar the relative humidity is stabilized so the moist inner parts leech that moisture out to the dryer outer portions of the nugs.

I'm about positive thats the result because I think every grower has jarred stuff up a little too early and had this outcome.

try this.

leave a nug out on the table for a day or two, let it get OVERly dry (make it a smaller sacrificial nug) and then jar it up by itself in a clean and dry jar. I bet the pre jarring taste/smell and after jarring taste/smell will have skipped over this 'going bad' phase. (might be a bit harsh from being overly dry, however it shouldn't get 'grassier' than before going in)

I've tried the little plastic jars that bud comes in at the medical dispensaries. Those are far less airtight than mason jars, but the bud will still smoke just fine after being stored in those. It just won't stay fresh for very long, but the ash won't turn black the way it does if I store in mason jars.

Properly grown herbs will not have a black ash no matter the storage method. Poorly grown herbs needs cure time to remove chlorophyll. If you cannot puff your herbs with 4 days hanging and get a white ash, you made a mistake growing. Peace GS

Okay, again, this is excellent quality bud prior to going into the jars. It smokes EXTREMELY WELL prior to going into the jars, produces a wonderful high, and the ash will be nice and white. It is not poorly grown by any means.

After being in the jars, it's shit.

I should mention that I'm using small 4oz mason jars for this. Don't know if size matters, but I did find that if I fill them up to the top, this degradation process occurs more quickly.

get a hygrometer...you might be surprised how moist it still is, even when it seems dry. The faster it dries, the easier it is to misread the actual moisture content. Be logical, it's not the jars.
