Medical Marijuana: The Government’s View
Published: November 23, 2011

To the Editor:
In his Nov. 7 Op-Ed article, “Reefer Madness,” Ethan Nadelmann criticized the Obama administration’s position on medical marijuana and described the debate as “essentially a cultural and political struggle.”
The issue of medical marijuana is not about culture and counterculture. It is not a struggle; it is not a war. It simply comes down to how we approve medications as safe and effective for use in the United States. To date, the Food and Drug Administration has not found smoked marijuana to be either safe or effective medicine for any condition.
No national medical association has come out in favor of smoked marijuana for widespread medical use. Further, many public health organizations, including the American Cancer Society, American Glaucoma Foundation, National Pain Foundation and National Multiple Sclerosis Society, do not support smoked “medical” marijuana.
The administration’s position is clear: the medication approval process should remain above the political fray. Smoked marijuana does not meet scientific standards for safe and effective medicine, and marijuana use and distribution remain illegal under federal law for any purpose.
Like our National Drug Control Strategy, it is a position driven by evidence, not ideology. When it comes to protecting public health and public safety, the American people deserve no less.
RAFAEL LEMAITRE
Associate Director for Public Affairs
Office of National Drug Control Policy
Washington, Nov. 14, 2011
A version of this letter appeared in print on November 24, 2011, on page A34 of the New York edition with the headline: Medical Marijuana: The Government’s View.

"It simply comes down to how we approve medications as safe and effective for use in the United States."

Right, the correct people have not been payed off in the correct "system" approved manor. Is this why we see medications recalled because of damaging effects?...because the FDA uses such a stringent and scientific basis for its approval of cretin (big pharma) drugs?

"look! they are using unapproved medicine! quick! shoot them or jail them or something!"

or just looking at it the plain way

"fuck! they are having fun! fine them or jail them!"

should this be called lack of intelligence or just sheer lunacy?

My thoughts exactly. Why didnt he have an opinion on eaten or vaped? lol

The reason that the article is double-speak focused on "smoking" should be a big heads up.

No national doctor group studies say "smoking" is healthy.... but they all say that cannabis is.

If they mention eating or vaping it... they'd have to mention that it is superior to most Rx medicines used for the same purposes.

We live in a sick society... get used to it or get out.

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

Hey thank you all for your comments..just a look where Rafe works "RAFAEL LEMAITRE Associate Director for Public Affairs Office of National Drug Control Policy"..
.and that word "control" gives me insight as to which way this story would lean.

I smoke very little now days, I use it in tinctures n in teas, but I smoked for years, and know thousands that have and do, and none have any provable ill effects from smoking cannabis. The problem is when the science is done by these people it is conducted in a way to prove, or fabricate, the negatives rather than the positives. Can you imagine the billions of health care cost dollars our country would save it they were to go after tobacco, a proven killer, rather than cannabis? .... <..don't go there Doobie!

As a chronic pain sufferer my point has always been..if one puff off a joint brings something as little as a smile, or helps me feel better in any way, that is medical relief to me. Some of these people like Rafe would have to be in my condition to understand that....be well...DD

ME: They haven't found "smoked" marijuana to have an medical effect? Ok then how about edibles? (I know smoked does, just for reason's sake)

MAN IN SUIT: Yes, the edible. It has over 60 chemicals not tested.

ME: The FDA approves things that could cause epigenetic changes in our DNA over time and in generations, why not let somebody be responsible for their own lives, instead of choosing something irresponsible for their own lives like alcohol and what not, that you approve of?

MAN IT SUIT: *shoots me*

It is a war, they stated it perfectly when they said "It's not a stuggle, it's not a war."

Yes it is. It's a war on our rights, our bodies, and people getting busted for soft-ass drugs yet their dog gets shot or them....FOR KILLER POT?

If they really, really thought this was about medicinal use....THEN WHY the propaganda ads paid for by alcohol and tobacco?

The ads aren't paid for by them anymore, obviously they are funding through the same though. They are scheming like they don't LIE.

Not medical?

Take 100 people with pain. Have them fucking smoke.

Now ask them if THEIR PAIN, not their distraction to the pain, is present.

They will all showed significant decrease in painful areas.

The FDA does not test anything. Many, many drugs rotted people's brains and caused special syndromes with seizure medication. Now the same meds are only given to dogs.

People were using them for years.

The SSRI they approve. People with problems become suicidal sometimes.

What they haven't told you, it's insane rage and the person can become homocidal and shotgun their family.....like one of the cases.

...And using this logic; at some point in the future am I going to be frying potato chips in small batches in my closet?

I'm with GP73LPC...FUCK BIG PHARMA...and FUCK THE PROFITEERING BASTARDS DILUTING OUR FREEDOM!!!!

True story....

Guy up here was on SSRI's... they changed his dosage. A couple of days later he calls 911.

"I've just shot my best friend and I don't know why. I can't handle this, I think I'm going to shoot myself.

Cops showed up to a house with the friend, dead on the front porch at the door and the dude dead with a self-inflicted head wound from the same rifle.

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

p.s. There are a LOT of cases like this... you just need to dig up the facts behind them.

Requiring folks to buckle up is in my mind clearly unconstitutional. But it saves lives, says the bureaucrats. I dunno but I feel that my freedom to choose to buckle up or not trumps the govt interest in keeping me alive as a working stiff and therefore a "contributing member" of society.... if that was the reason. (Kinda reminds me of Paul Revere: "Give me liberty or give me death")

Anyways, if I want to be stupid and not wear a seat belt, it's on me. When they started protecting me from the consequences of my own decisions, decisions that does not harm anyone or anything else, they also started making me a robot and a slave.

And also if Obamacare in unconstitutional so is requiring me to buy car insurance. Just some more coins for the state, insurance co's, and car companies--cause they don't have to make safer cars. (Ford once made a hemp car that did not even dent ....... and putting the engine up front is like a giant sledgehammer in a car crash).

Just sayin there's always some money interest behind these decisions and it just slows down innovation.

we need keep some innovators on our slope...their's is too slippery.
anyway the propaganda to sway SCOTUS opinion is the grease that makes that slope slippery!

the larger the gov becomes, the less we have to have to define ourselves as...free.

we are closing on the break point...advantage gov..

Its almost unbelievable how there is SO MUCH evidence of the bennefits of cannabis, for so many things, and that our government and a percentage of the people GREEDY and ignorant to the facts. This is nothing more then selfish opression.

the government's view is money.

if cannabis helps people, what other thing that helps people that costs money are they not spending their money on?

That's why they try to sell it, but it comes infinitely from the earth, give me one or two seeds, you'll cover the earth possibly. They're afraid we're free, because it makes them 'less free.'
