Hi Guys

i read through a few of the apartment growing threads on various sites including this one, the biggest point of failiure seemed to be when the landlord walked in.

I had an idea of inverting a security light, normally these turn on for 5-10 mins when someone walks onto your drive through the IR (i think) beam.

I would like to do the opposite, turn off the power for an hour (or even 5-10 mins) when someone opens the door to the apartment by pointing the IR receiver at the door, so any unexpected entrance, turn everything off.

anyone care to suggest how i might accomplish this, preferably without getting a degree in electronics

help me expand this idea please
thanks

how is turning the power off to the grow gonna keep an intruder from seeing/smelling the grow?? i dont get it? if they are in ur home and unwelcome.. the power being on or off seems to matter very little? unless u have a stealth closet or cab maybe... my two cents.

You my friend need a stealth grow box. Check out the one I did and take it from there. It's absolutely silent, there are no vibrations to feel when you touch the box, no odor of marijuana growing and it looks exactly like a high quality piece of furniture you are proud to show.

Nothing will withstand a determined inspection. You have to survive the casual observer's attention, so plan based upon that maxim and you might be okay.

i had this... it also had a main kill switch controlled by a remote.

i could shut the whole cab down with one click of the remote. it would only work for brief time as the stink would drift out of the cab eventually...

if you are mechanically/electrically inclined you could probably combine a unit like i used in combination with an IR beam for breaking the circuit...

Hey Guys

thanks for the lots of replies, though i see many dont see why this would be helpful trust me this is very helpful from keeping it from my g/f as well as a casual inspection.

i do indeed have a very stealthly cab, micro sized, so see no, smell possibly though the box in question is the veg box, the flower box is a large computer case so it having fan noise is not an issue

Better idea change the locks!
i do that whenever possible, usually give the landlord a set of keys that dont work after changing the lock but also need to keep this undercover from my g/f as from previous experience you keep this stuff to yourself

not sure how you managed absolutly silent, i have got it down to a vague hum, i do have a highly stealthy box apart from this hum, how did you get down to complete silence??

When those fans go off, it tends to stink real quick. Just ask the cable guy
we are talking a micro grow in a subwoofer, 1 plant aiming for around 1oz, northern lights crossed with mango and lots of fresh fruit in the room, so am more concerned by the fan noise, am running a couple of silent eagle fans (16db) but still i just want a cut out. i am not a noob and usually do a large grow tent but the electricity bill was a killer so i have downsized to personal only and LED lighting/electroculture.

a brief time would be great, love your setup, way larger than mine though the grow area is the same just split accoss two boxes, one small and one slightly bigger, though i may get a fish tank as that will cover any hum from the fans and provide a good excuse for a co2 cannister , where did you get the remote from? kudos for the design, i think you will have much better airflow than me, something i need to work on

either way, does anyone think a security light could be inverted? as these do the exact opposite of what i want or shall i get the electronics books out and make my own circuit?

you could run the whole room/system off a contact relay, set to run on a normally closed circuit within the relay. when the solenoid is activated it will open the circuit to the whole system therfore breaking all power in that circuit to the system. that solenoid on the contact relay can run off a simple motion sensor.

when the motion sensor would normally turn on a light, it would send 120v to the lightbulb. when the motion sensor times out, it shuts the 120v going to the solenoid on the contact relay an there fore turnin all lights/system back on. very simple. would cost 20-30 for a contact relay an what ever a motion sensor would cost.

Do you really want the electricity to your grow to shut off every time you open your front door? How many times a day do you open your front door?

Day before yesterday I saw an IR remote shut off switch advertised for turning on and off outside lights. I think most hardware stores are carrying these now. It was rated for ten amps.

A fish tank is a great cover. It makes all the growroom noises. It hums, gurgles, bubbles, and and the hobby is a good excuse for a lot of our investments.

now that actually sounds workable, internally this is a 12v setup (LED lights/fans) here in england we have maplins rather than radio shack (though not as extensive), i found this one which i think is the same as you are talking about.

they also have a motion sensor kit does this suit it says
"

  • On-board motion sensor latches a relay if even a slight motion is sensed
  • Reset button returns the relay to an unenergised state
  • Single pole changeover relay rated at 24V 10A (not suitable for direct switching of mains voltages)
  • Requires a 12V power supply
"
not too sure about the relay part, hmmmm too many questions same as usual

pretty much, am growing autoflowers so light cycle not a concern and this is more for turning on when i go out for the night/working, also have built in battery backup power

cool, you have a link?? or do you mean a security light which agreed is in all hardware stores and the original subject of this thread

am begining to think this is a must have

thanks for the compliment...

the remotes i am talking about are manually switched on and off, but it gives you remote control of whatever is plugged into it. probably mostly sold for outdoor christmas lights, turning on interior lights from outside when arriving home late, etc....

google 'Skylink WS-100/WS-100N Wireless Remote Control' for an example of what i am talking about. these type devices are available at hardware stores, walmart, home depot, lowes, etc...

i didn't go back to read your description of your air flow, but i keep neg pressure in my grow chamber with a passive intake and a couple PC fans exhausting into my scrubber/ozone chamber before being expelled from the cab by positive pressure in the scrubber/ozone chamber.

as far as the fishtank, it's a great idea, but understand water is over 8 lbs a gallon, so that 55 gallon tank you see on top of my cabinet weighs over 500 lbs when completed loaded. :yoinks: i had to really reinforce the cabinet. i used 9 - 2x4's built in the reinforcement. i moved the cabinet twice during the years i used it. if was one heavy mofo...

a small fishtank would weigh much less, but just make sure you cab(s) can handle the weight...

good luck
