Mason Jars....

When sealing mason type jars, use a cig lighter or small torch to VERY GENTLY melt the red sealing wax under the lid. This will VASTLY improve long term seal!

Posted this in another thread, but thought it should have it's own.:jump:

I use a little cooking oil on the jar lip to get more turn of the ring. Less is more.

You can also boil the rings in a pot of water. The heat will expand the ring long enough to allow extra turn. Might need a pair of gloves.

dude smoking ANYTHING will slowly kill you! pot is not exempt from this rule! carbon monoxide is a carcinogen and present in all smoke regardless of the source...

Smoking anything, cigarettes, cigars, pot, will also increase chances of developing emphysema. Check out what smoking a joint will put into your lungs. Take a cigarette filter and roll it in the end of your doobage. After finishing it look at the filter. You'll be surprised at what you are taking up.

Yes of course it is true that when a carbon-based product is burned using a butane lighter, carcinogens are produced.....cannabis is not exempt from this scientific fact, but i would
encourage you to read the work of Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, an Israeli researcher who is the
world's leading authority on endogenous and exogenous cannabinoids and their effects....cannabinoids protect neurons from damage and hinder tumor growth....i encourage you to read his abstracts and I believe I have posted them before.....

Notice that I did not say that smoking cannabis cures cancer.....nor did I say that smoking cannabis will give you cancer....it is much more informative and much less inflammatory to say that the cannabinoid molecule hinders tumor growth while the carbon monoxide molecule is a known carcinogen.....

There is a certain AM radio host who holds advanced degrees in science and he always says the same thing, namely that burning any carbon-based substance produces carcinogens.....of course this is correct but it is a gross over-simplification of reality and it minimizes the benefits of the cannabinoid molecule as elucidated by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam.....it is much like a debater's trick, a rhetorical device, a logical fallacy known as the "strawman" where a very simple idea is presented as proof when the reality is actually much more complex.....

There are carcinogens in every breath you take every single day in every city around the world.....
There are carcinogens in every breath a caveman took every night as he sat by the fire.....
There are cancer cells in 90% of all biopsies of post-mortem prostate glands (is it right to say all men have cancer?)

You can minimize the cancer-causing agents in a variety of ways which i will not discuss at length at this particular moment.....

What I do want to say is that it is a very interesting thread topic "Mason Jars" which was the topic of this thread and I believe many people can benefit from an in-depth discussion of Mason Jars....

What do people think are the best brands of Mason Jars to use? All jars with the rubber insert seem to impart a rubbery flavor which seems less than ideal. Are there any mason
jar companies that make lids with no rubber (or plastic) at all, such as the Knorr canning
jars? It seems like someone would make an absolutely ideal jar for storage....

The absolute ideal jar for storage would be:

* Amber Coloured to prevent light penetration
* Wide-mouthed for ease of use
* Avoid rubber or plastic

The fallacy you referred to is not called strawman. Strawman is when you put an argument in your opponent's mouth so you can demolish the "other side", making it seem as if you discredited the person.

Because your opponent never made the argument in the first place, it is like a man made of straw. Taking it down is not the same as fighting the real thing.

Mason jars are designed for boiling to soften the soft plastic ring. I haven't bothered since I have product stored under vacuum for months and the seal held fine.

The ring on the lid of a Mason Jar is made from rubber. Softening it up with some applied heat will definitely give you a better seal, but if overheated (With a flame source) your precious contents may pickup a nasty taste. I would recommend just throw the lids in boiling water to heat them up, then wipe them dry and put them on the jar before they have cooled.

Another option would be to just seal the lid on with some paraffin wax. Works perfectly for preserves, just pour it on the lid and not your contents like you would for Jam, Etc ;-)
