Okay so here is the deal, the bulb, 1000w, is to heavy for the socket(the thing wich you screaw the bulb too) and therefore its not hanging acurate, i need to adjust that and thought about support the bulb with a steel wire. Dont know how to explain it but i want to have the light bulb hanging in the steel wire - so i think my main question is: is it bad for the light bulb to be in direct contact with a metal/steel wire?

i wouldn't recommend supporting the lamp that way but if it is the only way make sure that the wire has a little slack for expansion as the lamp heats myself i would try reenforcing the bracket that holds the socket or the reflector wherever the flex is

:yeahthats

It sounds like the socket is not properly supported. Post a pic of the socket and I am sure you will get suggestions on how to fix it right.

I'd tighten the screws holding the socket assembly to the hood.

This. I don't know it for a fact, but it seems to me that having metal on glass like that is just asking for an exploding bulb or worse, a house fire. I've also been known to use thick zip ties when I can't find the proper threaded bolts/nuts for my hoods, which, while maybe a little afro-engineered, works well enough and has never given me any issues.

If your reflector cant support a tube full of nothing (it's a vacuum in there) it's time to get a real reflector. Maybe a strip of strong sheet metal along the top of the reflector to reinforce it, replace socket holder with metal sufficient to hold the socket up, a U bolt through the top that wraps underneath the open end of the socket...

Still, I'd strongly consider replacing the unit.

exactly what freezerboy said.

these HID lamps are nothing to skimp on. they can easily burn a house down if not treated with respect and proper safety measures are used.

FWIW i find myself loosening and readjusting the thumbscrews that support the mogul on my large adjust a wings to keep the lamp properly horizontal and that's just with an LU 1000 it would be worse with a heaver lamp so this is not only a problem with cheap reflectors

Franks experience trumps my theories. Still, I'd look to reinforce the plates themselves with something less flexible.
