Urea, whats your take on it?????

Hey to all, just wanted to ask what's your opinion on urea? Is it good or bad? Is it organic or not. Is the any benefits to using it?? Any negatives on using it? I hear from people saying it causes a bad taste in their finished product?

So if the people with more knowledge can shim in and elaborate in urea and give their opinion..

I looked to see if there was a thread in urea and couldn't find one so I decided to start one..

i used it years ago as a foliar feed if my plants needed a fast nitrogen boost, but only used it in veg, worked fine and didnt seem to have any negative effects, but its quite powerfull so dont overuse it, i use Fish-Mix as a nitrogen boost now, works a bit slower but it feels more right

i worked at a orchid nursery years ago and they used Urea alot, together with other fertilizers ofcourse, but they where mostly foliar feeding the plants because orchid roots can be very sensitive to nutes, but the leaves are more resistant (not true for all species) so they could pump more nutrients into the plants thru the leaves than the roots and get bigger plants faster, and by that making more money

So its good to use in veg?? But just because something is working good, don't abuse it in hopes of it working better lol...

I hear people always say how fast their plants grow using urea.

Thanks for the response

Specifically urea?
There are a few threads for urine as a fert.
I have used and will use again as it is a very old and usable fert.
There are those who hold a negative opinion about it, but my observation about the majority of the negativity is centered around how gross it is.

Señor Chang, Urea is not the same as Urin, Urea is like 99% pure nitrogen and can be absorbed thru the leaves, but yea Urin can be a good fertilizer but i have only used it outdoors

green thumbs, you should only use Urea if your plants need a nitrogen boost (if you feel your leaves needs some more green), you cant use it as your only fertilizer, another problem is that Urea is nitrate nitrogen (i think its called that in english) which is a realy fast acting nitrogen source that might give you streachier plants, more easily burns the roots and easily gets leached out of the soil, the best nitrogen source is ammonium nitrogen as it gets bound to the soil and only release as the plants have use for it, it should also give you less streachy plants (there was a long debate about nitrate vs ammonium nitrogen and how it affected the streaching of the plants on the old Cannabisworld)

Roach im going to start using a fertilizer that has some urea in it...

ahh okay, i thought you where gonna use the Urea pure, i used the fertilizer from the orchid nursery i worked at for my cannabis for years and it worked fine, so yours should work fine too

My take...urea is just another form of NH4 nitrogen. Whether or not it is good in a particular application really depends on the media and alkalinity of your water. If you need to drive down pH in your media it is fine. If you need to maintain or raise pH in your particular media it would suck...you would want nitrogen in the NO3 form.

Depends entirely on your specific situation.

Roach no I wasn't going to use it in pure form.. I bought some fertilizer that contains urea and didn't know what to make of it.. for the longest time I avoided fertilizers containing urea because of what I have read online.

YosemiteSam thanks for your input. I was hoping you would come to this thread and have you bring your knowledge.

Urea is not organic, it is synthetic. The organic version of Urea is urine, im pretty sure anyway, I am in hort class and we touched on that a while back.

P.s I just smoked a bunch of hash and am to lazy to look in my book, so we will see how i feel about this tomorrow, it is very common in the hort and agriculture world

As an indoor gardener I find little use for additional nitrogen.

Using the Lucas Formula throughout veg and flower makes for more solid and compact plants. It has enough nitrogen for good growth but not so much that it stretches nodes.

That being said, I'm sure your soil is fine with Urea in it. :D

Stay Safe! :D
