when i make a paragraph on a forum like this, i could have 4-8 spelling errors. this would of never been the case with me, several years ago. do i care? fuck no! SPELL CHECK!!

technology is cool, but......

and in your case bro I'd have to agree, Spell Check does not work in the title line of threads here @ ICMag where you've actually misspelled the word as 'Actualy'

case closed!

Definitely agree with many points here on both sides of the fence. To add...for me technology helps me do things faster and easier so I can focus on other things.

without googling this.....I think it was Malcolm Muggeridge who once said that we are educating ourselves into imbecility. I don't necessarily think that we've become dumb due to our tech....as in the case of phone numbers...I hate that I don't know hardly anybody's phone number anymore...but I certainly know my phone number and other close peoples phone numbers. When we were younger we didn't know as many people and locally the prefixes for the numbers weren't as diverse as they are today. I hate that I don't own a current set of encyclopedia's but really why would I? Aside from aesthetics.
I do agree that many many many people don't want to do their own homework and learn things on their own...failure is an excellent teacher....and most of those types that don't want to do their homework, will fail before they really succeed. Tech things which have made us more lazy than anything and are great in and of themselves....it's our own fault that we rely so heavily on these things.

this dumbing down of our society, isnt an accident. The elite in power are making the herd stupid and weak, and slow so we are easier to trick and catch and round up when the time comes,/ On this rememberance day think back to WW2 where a society similar to ours feel on some tuff times...... and convinced their people that they had to do away with all the "scum" that was holding up the progress/ taking our jobs away ..........people who where inferior...
History has a funny way of repeating itself , wonder who the US will invade next ?, mexico? maybe,

sorry bout the rant , got off topic, lol

technology is what allows us all to communicate on ICMAG... good luck uploading your grow shots in the stone age brah...

technology has only expanded our advancement, taken us to new heights never achieved. mass communication on a global scale, information on demand, yes googling, it must have saved people so much time looking for answers, its unbelievable...

yes your examples are valid, but your gripes are with the individuals rather than what they use to annoy you...

It very well has an effect on a persons ability of direction. If you've grown up on Tom-Tom type GPS units or the apps in your phone or tablet my bet is I can run circles around you in a city that's strange to both of us.

In 'the old days' there were very few city maps readily available to the public, highway maps were/are available everywhere though; you'd get to your destination city and if well prepared you'd have hand written directions obtained via phone or letter from the person or business you were visiting. If you were lucky they were accurate and the teller of said directions hopefully was the kind of person who made no assumptions of your intuitive abilities of direction.

Field Test: A car & driver NO cell phones, tablets, GPS devices.
take your average 21 yr old and enter a large city from the south on an interstate highway, get off at the 1st exit and give him/her a written address also telling them that the destination is on the far northeast side of the city. Do you think that they'd be clever enough to hop right back onto the highway again to at least get into the right neighborhood? My guess is that over 90% of them would ask you right away, "which way's north?" and would start driving in whatever direction you pointed your finger.

How long would it take them to reach that destination? How long would it take any of the old timers here who had to learn 'the hard way?' Again I'm guessing but what would take me (or any old timer) 15 minutes to do might take them 45-60 minutes. After decades of driving truck and taxi I have a great sense of direction. Their very best hope & chance might be asking someone who says "I'm headed right that way, follow me."

As for me, I might have to stop and ask in a strange city under the same guidelines but I'd get into the right area by actually heading north & east first. Let's say the address was 2207 Jefferson Blvd I just might look for & find the 20th St. exit on the highway and mosey on up to 22nd street and drive a few blocks, when I maybe notice the names of other streets named after other presidents I know I'm in the right 'hood, but having to do this several thousand times over the years can give you an edge & a helpful sense of direction.

I'm not saying that a natural lack of direction is cause to call someone stupid, no not at all but it may someday be a disadvantage.

I don't think technology makes us dumber, I think how we use technology makes us dumber!
Also people that are dumb are protected from getting killed by thing like airbags, lawn mowers that shut off when you let go of the handle, now cars that stop themselves, to protect the driver that's not paying attention!, planes that fly themselves, even land themselves, what's next??????!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if anybody under 30 can read a Thomas Guide? Hell I wonder if anyone under 30 knows what a Thomas Guide is............... :D

Dad used to tell us to go outside and play if he caught us watching tv in the middle of the day. He'd walk back by 15 minutes later and if you were still there in front of the boob tube, he'd say "OK don't wanna play? Follow me..." and he'd give you some sort of chore to do. Needless to say it didn't take too many times before I learned my lesson.

an inanimate object cannot make us do things

we make the choices

we are the responsible ones

I think that it is definitely a double edged sword, but like has pretty much always been the case if someone wants to be ignorant and lazy, they will be ignorant and lazy. If they want to educate themselves, they will educate themselves. Technology makes it much more efficient these days to learn almost any subject, but it also makes it incredibly easy for people to do nothing. Like has been stated before its not a problem of technology really, its a problem that some people prefer to be lazy.

We live in the information age. Without it people here would be growing by trial and error. The availability of information advances us so we don't reinvent the wheel and make the mistakes of people who have already learnt these lessons the hard way. Information to people means more individual power. Technology provides great resources for the advancement of our mind and species. I'm sure there are a lot of Luddite's out there. But we are recording history in a public and accessible way like never before. From great records we get great architecture, but not necessarily innovation. There is always a flip side. But ultimately it is what it is... computer power multiples experientially... and it's certainly here to stay because it's proven it's economic viability.

Missing the pleasure of more tactile relationships I personally find the greatest loss. But it is what it is, and things are changing. You either ride the wave, or paddle upstream on your own.

I don't think technology makes us stupid. If anything it enhances the learning process and makes information much more readily available.

I am a researcher at a pharma company..In the old days we would go the library and and look at journals, journal indexes, books, etc. to find information. Oftentimes you would spend days or weeks looking for all the information you need.

These days I type in the search terms I am looking for into google, and it not only brings up the relevant journal articles I need, but also tons of other information that I otherwise would not have found.

Now, I will say that technology has a downside in that we become to dependent on it. For many the internet and forums such as this has replaced interaction with real human beings, it makes us lazy because it is much easier to entertain yourself on the internet or playing xbox than it is to go outside and get exercise.

I think if the internet didn't exist I'd see distant family members far more often...and old friends. Hell, friends in general.

Remember the days of just showing up at someone's house to hang out?and when you hung out it was just you and them chillin ...nowadays it's a 2 day text/phonetag game. There's nothing I hate more then hanging out with someone I haven't seen in a while and try to catch up with them but they're on their phone texting the entire time....I turn mine off to be polite without looking at it I'm talking to someone.

...and man I used to be a great speller...now I just spell check everything instead of trying to remember the right way to spell.

RL socialization should always be priority with your true friends. ...texts and shit just don't cut it.

I agree with that to a certain extent.

These days though I actually prefer electronic communication...Im pushing 10-12 hour days at work, thats on top of an hour long commute. Between that and trying to maintain a household I hardly have any free time to myself, much less free time to devote to friends unfortunately, so e-communication is the best way to get ahold of me and try to arrange a meet up.

We just need to use tech where it is beneficial. If it's not improving your relationships with people, it's not the right tech. If it is, it's the right tech. Your relationship determines the best technology to use. Be that phone, in person, via a social network. It's our responsibility to be wise and appropriate, not technology's :comfort:
