Where do YOU view the trichs?

I have a plant that is shooting out new foxtails all over her main colas, complete with white hairs and clear trichs.

It would seem lower on the bud would have more mature trichs, so it makes sense to measure right in the middle for the best results, right?

I tend to check right near the top because its more easily accessible but at the same time the tops sometimes have new growth and the rest of the cola might be getting a bit old.

Whatcha think?

i would say ignore the foxtails and go by the bulk of the main bud, the calyxes not the leaves, the leaves seem to amber up before the calyxes...

I was wondering the *exact* same thing and came to the exact same conclusion the other day as you. I also noticed that the mini leaves tight into the bud (must be a name for them?) always have their trichomes mature faster than the actual calyx trichomes and often they will be amber on the tight in leaves and barely starting cloudy on the calyx trichomes.

I'm kind of checking all over and averaging right now but ignoring any really new calyxes/ trichomes as much as possible.

usually i'll snip the end from a pointy bud leaf and check it out under a microscope. just for the sake of being thorough i take samples from the top, middle, and lower buds.

never really occurred to me that the trichs on the calyxes could mature at different rates than the leaves. i guess i'll be checking those out from now on also.

i just check with my eyes,

first the crystal are clearly clear (to the naked eye)

then the crystals become white and sparkle more and more (when the trichome is full with white and completely reflects back the light)

as this happens, the seedpods get fat.

the trichomes get duller and redder as it gets more amber, but that doesnt happen till after the seedpods get fat. (mostly)

but, when its all fat and sparkly and most of the pistils have died off, thats when its ready in my book.

this is all visible with the naked eye.

i check the pointy bud leaves as well, i sample from different locations and always snip as close to the bud as possible. its all viewed by a micro scope.
