Recycling SuperSoil

I have a harvest coming up next month and won't be planting again until January. The SS is pretty hot. Would be a hot recycle.

If the bottom wasn't so potentially hot I'd be tempted to simply add compost and EWC on the surface and no-till them

it's the bone and the blood that make super soil so hot.

I did a recycled soil mix similar to SS and when it was all mixed up it was literally hot to the touch. The next round I nixed the B & B and things worked much better, and no heat. I'll never use that shit again.

Did you replace them with anything?

No, I found that my recycled soil works best with less shit added to it. I dont mind feeding every few weeks. When too much is added to the soil I run into problems with leafs burning up and curled ugly leaves.

Any time I've run a heavy nutrient load in my soil I have always run in to problems. Water only is too hard to perfect and even Subcool says his mix isnt necessarily water only.

So far my SS mix has been 100% right on. Like - textbook perfect. Considering my abortion of a last grow, I'm thrilled out of my mind. No pests, no burnt tips. 'Course I'm also watering with BluMats without a hitch. Knock on wood this has been the best and least problematic grow I ever had. No feeding other than some molasses and hard well water.

Having said all that, I'd rather not mix up fresh SS next time. I'd rather re-use what I have. I'd also like a little clover cover crop

Been thinking of dropping the water only too, can't control enough!Have you seen the revs mix?Now that's a lot of stuff man!!So I'm going back to amended(light) with liquid nutes, don't really like the way PBP bloom keeps the plant green to long, imo,so might try Earth juice?

I here you on the leaves(especially on the sat dom plants)one of many reasons to switch back.

I hear ya man, I find it much harder to control the outcome when running many strains in the same heavily amended soil. I've been experimenting this year with different mixes and proportions and I have better success when if it's not enough I can add more, but if you have too much to begin with it burns the shit out of them and then there is nothing you can do to make it better.

When I had blood and bone in my mix along with all of the other shit I use it roasted all of my sour diesels, it was depressing to look at lol.

Over the last few years of growing organically I am starting to think MJ needs just a few very basic ingredients to thrive.

when i did supersoil (hotter than subcools) , they got hungry and had to feed liquid nutes.

How much soil did you have going cyat? I've got 4 plants in 7 gallon pails, so a lot of fuel. So far my experience has been what most people have found. Pretty awesome compared to other grow styles I've tried. The biggest joy is that it's just simple soil without the nonsense.

Anywho, at this point I guess I should just assume the lower soil in the pail is still too hot for seedlings that may shoot a deep tap root and burn. I'll have to transplant a seedling in as I did before. Maybe I'll try a couple of each.

I thought about this before, kinda like less is more,in a way. It's rewarding to learn the in's and out's of plants and succeed at it!:dance013:

rrog they were in 5gal nursery pots so only 3 gal of soil, maybe too small.

I have 5 weeks left before I harvest. I have added a bit of EWC and compost and watered in thoroughly. I don't think any more before harvest. Also have clover growing. They'll take of better once they have some light.

I wonder if a bit of fish emulsion would be in order. I can't count on the clover for a lot of added N at this point.

Hmm, the forum ate my post..... not sure why it changed both to say "double post" when I just edited one......

Anyway, my suggestion was human urine. It is a pretty quick nitrogen source and is a good fertilizer in general. I keep some for emergencies. Salt and fat settles to the bottom though, so try to avoid using that part, though it shouldn't hurt if you do.

So you just let it rest for a day? Seems like it would get funky pretty quick.

I'm trying this SS recycle as a no-till. So I have to add amendments after I've harvested, now, so as not to hit the flowers with a big nute load at the end of flower.

So after I chop, I'll plop a seed in the pail. I could add N is whatever form to the soil perimeter to avoid the seed.

Traditional farmers in Europe used to keep huge barrels of human or animal urine in their gardens, letting them age for as much as several years. I've let some sit over a year. It develops a much darker brown color, and separates more. This "fermented" urine has lower salt content and a much gentler effect on plants. Urine also works to break down woody materials in compost. It's up there with fungus in terms of breakdown speed. It's very good as a starter for a hot compost of your old stems and whatnot. I say all this and caution that I barely use it personally, but when I need a fast acting natural fertilizer that doesn't massacre my soil microbes, urine seems to be a good choice thus far. I eat a lot of salt substitute in my diet though, so that affects the urine's content as well. I cook almost everything I eat from scratch because I'm poor and on a gluten-free diet. The way you feed yourself, feeds your kidneys, so if you eat a lot of junk don't bother. Deer urine is fairly good as a substitute I think. Any urine given directly to the plant should be diluted at minimum 5 parts water to 1 part urine, but I never like to exceed 10-15 parts water to 1 part urine. If you're going to let your soil cook in the bin for a while, you can put it in pure. I would never use more than about 1/4 of a cup per gallon of soil. Probably not a great idea to put into mixes with tons of blood meal in them, but I really don't know since I don't use blood meal ever. My bone meal has some nitrogen in it, plus I have manures and granular fertilizers in my mix, so I've never really needed it.

One of it's absolutely awesome uses though is reviving clones. I've had a lot of cuttings finally root when they've gotten a bit old and pale. Urine can revive them very quickly, if used gently(and diluted!). It gives a lot of those marginal cuttings a chance. A foliar dip for cuttings made from a very diluted urine solution can also help revive cuttings that are getting pale and lame.
