For those of you who aren't from this area, this is normal behavior. That doesn't mean that its acceptable or beneficial in any way.
As a kid, if you do something dad or mom didn't want you doing, you get a beating until they are satisfied. However, you still keep doing it or something else they don't like, then you get another beating.
They don't stop to think, are these beatings actually helping?
You just make them mad and they give out beatings. They are not mentally mature enough to think past that, and most never will be.
I used to get the belt all the time for accuisations against me by my step brothers. All they had to do was say I did something bad to them and I got the belt. My step brothers would complain to their mother about something I did and it would upset her, then she would be upset when my dad got home, then I'd get the belt. As soon as I got big enough to start fighting back, I did, and that was the end of beatings for me. I was the oldest and they didn't do it nearly as bad to my younger brothers.
Around here, this is normal, everyone I grew up with got treated the same way, with the exception of a few here and there, whose parents were well educated from proper institutions. My parents generation from this area were taught that to get your kids to act properly you had to instill fear in them, that if they didn't act right, it was going to be bad for them, very bad. Scare them into acting right.
The more rural areas, the worse it is, generally.
