Record Snowstorm in October?!

Our previous snowfall record for the entire month of October was just over 7 inches, now we could get up to a foot from one storm! Shit, I hope the power doesn't go out or doesn't stay down for days! I love snow and winter cold and snow records being broken, but I just hope we don't lose power! I do not have a generator and insufficient funds to run out for one now.

been there done that 20 years ago this week,
the blizzard of '91 is notorious up here.......

from Wiki:

The heavy snow began falling across east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin during the late afternoon hours of October 31. By midnight, the Twin Cities had already recorded 8.2 in (20.8 cm) of snow. This not only set a record for the largest amount of snow on that date, but also for the most snow ever recorded in the Twin Cities during the month of October. As the storm system pushed its way northward, more communities in eastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin began to experience similar conditions.

Over the next two days the snow continued to fall, leading to additional snowfall of one to two feet (30 cm to 60 cm). By the time the snow ended on November 3 the storm had dropped 36.9 in (93.7 cm) on Duluth, the largest single snow storm total in Minnesota history at that time. The Twin Cities received 28.4 in (72.1 cm), setting a single storm record for the metropolitan area. In all, at least one foot (30 cm) of snow fell in a swath approximately 100 mi (160 km) wide from south central Minnesota, northeastward into northwestern Wisconsin and into the Minnesota Arrowhead. A more narrow band of 2+ ft (60+ cm) of snow fell from the Twin Cities to Duluth and northward.

we got hit with 36+ inches like Duluth as I live just a bit west of there, we didn't lose power where I lived luckily enough as I also had no auxiliary heat or power source at the time, now I have 2 generators, 3 if I count the 5500 watt unit mounted in my motorhome which I can tap if I have to.

The biggest risk in losing power usually comes from ice storms which weigh the lines down beyond the strength of the hangers on the poles. I could be wrong in your case Nor'Easter if your power company usually has troubles with just snow.

yeah I have learned from you that Minnesota winters are much worse than ours, although I kind of knew this I did not know it was to this extent.... regularly below -20F in winter I heard you mention before, but 3 feet in one storm in October? Yikes! That would be like a record snowfall for the entire month of November here! We average 50-60 inches of snow a winter here, although it is usually well above or below that. Yes I really should get a generator. And I don't ever remember the power going out for snow since the Blizzard of '78, maybe it did once or twice but I don't remember it happening. A couple years back an ice storm knocked out power for 4 days I think, in some spots for weeks! With Irene this past August (I think), we had a tree on our power lines but it never took them down! But they are saying with leaves still on the trees (although that is mostly south and east of me, here most leaves are off already anyway), that trees could go down and cause "massive" power outages. Of course they do tend to overdramatize things.

really? You must be in the Rockies or something, I am in the Northeast. I love snow, but not the power going out.

Yeah i'm kinda worried about losing power too , but as long as it doesn't go out long it should be OK . i'm in a pretty good spot here , most storms go around us cuz we're in a double valley & the mountains block us from alot of the major snows .... thank god LOL

yeah well it has been snowing for about an hour now and is starting to come down pretty good now. Most local forcasters say 6-10 or 6-12 or 8 to 12, with online numbers ranging from 10-13. Although we supposedly got about 7 inches about 30 years ago, I personally don't remember that for some reason. I never remember more than about 2 inches, when the Patriots were romping on the Titans in the snow! (Oct19 2009)

yeah out in the country here, well around here it's considered country anyway. I will love every minute of it as long as we don't lose power. If we do, as long as it isn't more than a day it'll be ok. Otherwise, it will suck. I do love Nor'Easters and so that explains the username.

I love winter more than summer too, the only thing I like about summer is the beach and you kinda have to have heat for that! :D
But I too feel uncomfortable once it gets in the 70's, and I hate when the ground becomes bare in the winter. We have snow cover for a month or two most years, had it all winter long at least one winter I think.

I grew up in Northern Michigan, lived there most of my life. It seems the older I get the less I care for the cold weather lol..and I don't bounce as well as I used too for snowboarding or skiing.

Where im at we are only suppose to get 6 inches max. It was a bitch trying to get to work today, only a few inches at the time but people cant drive to save their live.

I was passing people on 2 lane back roads cause they were going 5mph, is that really necessary? I was coming up on this one guy and saw that he started going backwards down the hill instead of forwards, just went cruising right on by him lol.

Then on top of that had to turn around twice, once cause a down tree and once cause down lines.

Ride home shall be fun.
