Id like to start growing hydro but i do not know to much about it

Iv been reading all i can find on hydro but their is one thing i cannot seem to find

Do your roots have to be in a aerated res 24/7 or can you just manually just take a cup of ph water with nutes and pour it over your hydroton and let it drain through to get your roots wet , like once a day or something ?

I hope im asking this question in an understandable way lol cuz it took me a few mins to try to word it right lol

Much thanks for your help guys

hydroponics means that you have to supply the plant with all of it's food since the plant can't get any food from soil (since it isn't in any)

no, you cannot hand water hydroton. unless you stood there all day long.

in your post you mention roots in an aerated res, thats called deep water culture

thats not the only type of hydro around, it sounds like you are just starting out and aren't sure what type of hydro you want to try.

The closest thing to what you've described is a WaterFarm™. Hand water once a day and you'll be dead in no time. This is because Hydroton does not wick or absorb, it adsorbs like fly paper. What water doesn't stick (as in nearly all of it) needs to go somewhere. Either drain to waste or into a res for further use.

If you want to handwater once a day you'll need something to hold water in the root area such as soil, coco, rockwool.

If you go solid media with once a day feeding, start thinking of an automated system now. There will be a time when you can't be there today, or any day for the next week or two. With my DWC, I water once every other week as the norm. I can go 3 weeks if needed.

A resivoir is what holds the extra feed water that is regulated with a float valve to feed the main nutrient res or directly to individual pots/tables/buckets!

Your roots should be in the water or media of choice. Ex;my water level in my buckets is set at the bottom of my net pot...some set higher or lower! The roots will grow deep in the bucket.
In the net pot I use 4inch RW that wicks some water to the roots nearest the stem...little water is needed there cause cord roots form and are much stronger for holding the plant upright. The roots in the water will be thinner and and branch out with long and tiny feeder roots!

Many hydroton grows are based apon rock wool being hidden and underneath the hydroton!

If you're germinating your seedlings in rockwool, you can just put the hydroton around the rockwool as well. Once you're rooted you should be fine

you could use a nutrient injector hooked up inline with a garden hose.

I use a dosatron and it sucks the nutrient straight out of the bottle. No res to clean, and no mixing. You can set it to different ratios according to nutrient strength.

Easy feed systems has a setup that can add 6 different nutes or additives.
