What's new

outdoor is always better, what light brings outdoor indoor

any of you smoked outdoor recently and been reminded of how much more dynamic the high always is, true theres more leaf but the buzz just has more personality from outdoor plants, indoors ive had cfls churn out a nice buzz before and my mh plants have as well, but so far nomatter the hps bulb the nugs are grown under via friends or strangers in this state or that one the bud is always beneath outdoor in high, stone n buzz, so whats the real dealio on bulbs, what one gives outdoor types of buds to your indoor girls, cmh perhaps, its a question that usually gets answered '' its all in your head'', im sorry it isnt, indoor under hps cannot match the sun, so my question again is ,what comes closest?

so, far ive found adding a little blue to the hps, gives better nugs.

but put too much blue and the plants just get leafy as well.

im adding 23 w cfls 6500k to a 600w hps (the hps bulb also has some blue)and so far im finding increased smell.

take a look at plasma lighting, for example the Gavita Pro 300 LEP. Use for vegetative growth and in combination with HPS for flowering.

the only way to mimic sunlight is to use a full continuous spectrum. If you mix Red Green and Blue in the right amounts you will see white light too, but that white light is only built out of 3 very distinct colors and is not continuous. You need white light built of all colors, so full continuous.

My budroom has CMH and Sunpulse, both in 4000K. The sunpulse matches the CMH in spectrum but is digital. So far the best match I have been able to afford. Good all the way up to violet.

My veg room has minimal UVB (tropic ground level equivalent).
The test budroom is in the process of determining which strains UVB causes only a trigger effect and if some strains have a "more is better" response.
The trigger response to UVB is early oil production, no more, no better, just sooner. Adding 12 watts per square foot 450 nm (sky blue) HID aquarium light does early oil also.

I am after an altered effect, not just more. As IwannatokeNbone pointed out, there is a buzz some outdoor grown gives that is not available indoors. I also have tasted this.

I have burned three plants bald so far, the latest still has hair. I started high with the UVB and am working down, figure it is quicker this way.
For a real world reference the UVB level is now 1.5 x 10,023' on Mt Haleakala in Hawaii. Some guy took a photo of his meter display in front of the 10,023' sign. The reading was 545 microwatts per square centimeter.
My plant is down to 850 with 26 days alive and full heads of hairs, this is the record. The other end was damage in 2 days with 2100 microwatts/cm2. Needed sunscreen for watering that week.

UVB will bring it in.

Who says its solely the lights that make outdoor better?

The root system can be bigger, there is constant fresh air, and very good drainage. The microbes in the earth help the plant as well.

Way more to it than the sun.

I think the sun is far and away the bigger issue, assuming you are not rootbound or growing inorganic

this pretty much sums it up.

what you need to look into is "terroir"... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terroir

i guess you need to replicate good characteristics of terroir from outdoors and trying to replicate indoors...

i havent smoked good outdoor weed, its always brick weed so i guess i'm missing out :(

Soil and all the related stuff in soil is the other half. I am focussed on lights as I have more control over them. I did a simple nutrient additive (jamacian bat shit) and it improved both smell and taste, some insisted it was stronger also.
That was one small change in rockwool, real soil would make a real difference, I just don't have time.

I benefit from the work of others when it comes to nutes.
