oh one more thing:
"Less than 2% of existing light passes trough emitter..bla"
doesnt mean the reflector is 98% effective aka guides 98% of the photons from source to canopy - just another point you just missunderstood to push your advertising

Liar.

I never wrote it has 98% efficiency as a statement of fact wrt lumens (or PPF) from lamp and lumens (or PPF) exiting luminaire. I wrote I thought is was 96% or 97%, but after I double checked it's at least 95%. Also, those values are not found via the claim that "Less than 2% of existing light passes trough emitter ...".

And again: Yawn. You get to sail the fail boat, too bad there isn't a fail boat just for silly trolls ;)

Why is it your opinion that it is best to use a lamp vertically and only get indirect (reflected, if only once) light?

As far as I can recall, every industrial luminaire for high or low bay usage that I have been around (100's at least, probably 1000's) had a vertically oriented lamp. The only horizontal lamp applications I have seen are the cobra-style roadway luminaires and some of the cheaper wall-pack fixtures that have a compact envelope as a design criteria. These manufacturers have been perfecting their designs to maximize the light yield for decades.

Interesting that they eliminated the spiral wire
around the arc tube
safety feature on the agro bulb from other cdm bulbs
like these:

http://www.usa.lighting.philips.com/pwc_li/us_en/connect/tools_literature/downloads/p-6000.pdf

and still get an open fixture rating.

a can't find any specific info on how the agro
was designed for ag situations just the bulb spec.

EDIT: Here's the ballast for the Elite Agro 315 w CMH.

http://www.elightbulbs.com/Philips-07357-IZTMH210315RLF-Elite-MW-Metal-Halide-Ballast

It's on Amazon for under $400.

@ All,

Here is the SPD for the Philips Elite AGRO 315 w CMH:

@ Aside^2:

Have no fear, Cycloptics is releasing LED arrays soon too, which from their specs look very impressive ;)

(IIRC these are LED arrays)
  • Lightstalk™ Research Greenhouse Individual Bench Supplemental Lighting (coming soon)
  • CEA Lightstalk™ Hydroponic Vegetable Production Greenhouse Supplemental Lighting (coming soon)

I can honestly say I think I've read every page of this thread, but a lot of its been several months ago... Any opinions on the HTG CMH deal? I see its a GE bulb, is that ok? Philips seems to be the hype. Also, how noisy is the ballast, and will it cause any interference with my phone/cable/etc? I have some experience growing, but right now its with a VHO t5, not much personal experience with HID. Opinions, anyone?

thanks. now I see the inner safety glass .
better than the wire wrap, I imagine.
I'd be interested to know how much different
the AGRO SPD is from the other cmh'S.

I think this is the HTG bulb (they have their own product number)
it;s enclosed fixture rated.

GE CMH® ChromaFit™ lamps
'the GE is 3k & the phillips 4k

the lamp is universal rated and has more initial lumens 41,000 lumens vs 34,800 for the Phillips CMH (about 20% more initial lumens)

So am I correct in assuming "enclosed fixture rated" means I would need a hood with a lens? Once again, forgive my ignorence.
I guess after hours of reading, a little more and I,ve got it all figured out... My area is in my bedroom, think I'll go with the Philips... sorry once again...

It's worth a call or email to HTG to see why they sell an 'enclosed' rated bulb in an open fixture like that.

Here's a CMH from Venture (315watt)

MPC 315W/U/T12/UVS/PS/942 T12 PGZX18 Clear U 35000 20000 4200K 90

lumens, hours, color temp, CRI, universal position, open fixture rated

Takes a different ballast though;

Open Rated 315 Watt Ceramic Lamps, ANSI Type-O Rated C182/O

With the GE I am more worried about the lumen maintenance, see the data sheet, more than 10% per year depreciation.

btw the reason for the double balloon is safety: When these babies burst they burst well. A single glass cover would have been enough to filter any UV, this is to prevent the outer balloon from rupturing in case of a malfunction. Glass can take up quite a percentage of your light, so it is not said that it is a better solution than just a wire to keep the inner parts together in case of an explosion.

If you look at the philips specs of the standard non-agro version you see that the protected light outputs about 4.2 percent less.

I've got 3 weeks of flowering with 6 more to go with my new (first time) CMH setup and I just wanted to share my progress thus far:

I own two Sun System 10 Crop Master 400w ballasts. They are very highly rated. They get hot enough that you wouldn't want to stand on them barefoot but they won't give you a 3rd degree burn just from coming into contact with them.

They are pretty damn quiet.

yet, the only "wire wrap" protected bulbs puts out much less light than a unprotected bulb inside a protected reflector while the new protected bulb puts out even more light/w

the glass protection reliability is also higher than the "wire wrap" construction, beside that, the new bulb versions core got a very different design
..
for old revisions of protected bulbs the lumen maintance been quite a problem but it shouldn't be anymore thanks to the new design options :)tiphat: osram)

im planning to get this http://www.thehydrosource.com/Lighting/Reflectors/Hydrolux_Cool_Tube_Reflector_6_In.

do i need to get any other cords to attach to that???

thanks for the help!!!
