wait, so whats wrong with prison labor?

From what I see, many jails are lax as fuck, you can have tv's in your cell and shit.

wtf is wrong with forcing prisoners to work. Also don't they technically get some kind of tiny pay for it?

if your biggest complaint about American prisons is that some of them are forced to work, I suggest you go check out prisons in other countries. Might make you reconsider how "awful" American prisons are lol.
It financially motivates having a larger prison population. That financially motivates having laws such as the prohibition of cannabis. Lobbyists complete the circle by motivating legislators to enact laws supporting or vote against laws eliminating things like the prohibition of cannabis.

During the depression is was "the rock pile."
During the period of the colonization of America is was debtors prison.
Different names for the same thing.

Your view is essentially the the same as he character "Scrooge" from Dickens " A Christmas Carol"

I don't agree with you, but I guess you have the right to think that way.

corporations are profiting from this. that's fucked...

there should be no additional monetary incentive outside of a salary for police, prosecutors and judges. it's a conflict of interest.

as far as corporations go, quite simply this is slave labor and it has been abolished...

When the slave master needs more slaves he can just make up more reasons to put you in jail. I dont understand how anyone that smokes or grows could consider this a good thing. Let the man catch you and you and you'll be a slave too.

I think the biggest problem with the prison system is that we have too many people locked up that shouldn't be there.

Just in the news recently, a movie star computer hacker gets 120 years in jail, and a billionaire inside trader that banked 50 mill in a white collar heist gets 10 years but will probably serve 8 or less in club fed and gest to keep $40 million.

i think these inmates should be forced to work everyday but not for corporations.

they should be doing their time and giving something back to society.. they should be involved in public works...

Lots of good points. I really like gonzo's take. Unfortunately, we have corrupt lawmakers. Even public works isn't immune to corruption when we have corrupt lawmakers.

I still agree with gonzo even though some folks will corrupt whatever systems they can manage. IMO, enter regulation and enforcement. It's not perfect but few opportunities are.

in my state, and i assume in most, inmates do work. but most work behind bars, not in public. there are a few exceptions for the well behaved. but inmates are required to work while in prison. if they choose not to work say good-bye to a parole chance.

i would prefer to see them providing more to the community, but that would require more man power to guard them and our states are already hurting for funds to do their daily business...

they are offered 'good behavior time' if they work on the line, if they dont, they dont get a chance to get out early. thats not right. good behavior should be for being a model inmate, i.e. not fighting or starting trouble and working for the benefit of the prison population somehow.

im not saying all prisoners should be happy and have a good time or a relaxing non work enviorment, im just letting you know that there are lots of our brothers and sisters who are victims of the drug war who are forced into labor.

free up the herbsman!
