Here's a great user review from the IMDb website:

The best road movie ever made. To appreciate it you have got to try and see it from the culture of that era. It is totally anti establishment as was the mood of half of America. So the police are all idiots, the 'good ol boys' are either violent rednecks or passive disapproving onlookers. Kowalski (Barry Newman) is going to give those mid west conservatives something they won't forget, he's going to shake things up for a day or two. Kowalski is simply the symbol of the many disenfranchised at the time. The story starts at the end. We hear a boring stifling radio news item on the price of grain. We see dreary looking bystanders who need to be turned on. Then Super Soul (Cleavon Little) takes over the airwaves with his wild DJ antics and hippy music trying to jolt these people out of their fixed ways. The old and the new are clashing. This sets the mood we know from then it is rebellious. Other aspects the stunts the music the characters have been well covered below so there is no need to say more on that. Some have said that there is no point to this story or Kowalski's motives and have interpreted the title meaning that. But all a vanishing point is an artist name for the phenomena of perspective where two parallel lines seemingly meet and in the long straight roads of the journey we see plenty of vanishing points.

EDIT:
Oddly enough I've owned Vanishing Point on a 2 sided disc that I always assumed had 'Wide Screen' on one side & 'Standard' on the other, I was wrong. the disc I have had a UK version along w/the standard US release.

one night I finally put it in on the UK side and was saying "WTF?!?!?!?! where did that shyt come from?", suddenly a movie I'd loved since '71 was different.......

always wanted to watch that movie since they kept mentioning it in one of my favorites, death proof...

it's well worth the time/effort or price you pay to get this movie. This is not gonna be anything like Fast & Furious which is chock full of cheap repetitive special effects; this flick has heart and soul, it's the story of a tormented man who's seen it all.

Just watched the special on the Vault @ Fort Knox. They were trying to gain access to the vault since no civilian has been inside since the 70's. They never gained access to the vault and basically found no deffient answers to if there was actually gold in the vault to back American currancy. At the end of the show the three hosts answered if they thought the vault was empty or not. Based upon the info they found 2 think it empty. and 1 is a dumbass. If the vault is still filled with gold the american gov dosent own it anymore.

War of the Worlds. Damn good effects and the acting is good too. I am puzzled as to why Ebert did not like it much.
