what ive learned sprouting in coco

its seems that seedlings in coco like to grow tall n at times fall over, ive noticed this with hps bulbs n 2700k cfls, im pretty sure ive also noticed it with 6400k cfls. it seems like sprouting them in something quite small and letting them go a week and then replanting them deeper is the way to go, ive noticed over time how erb sprouts little roots up the stalk in most plants, even mature ones, ive read that if u bury your plant deeper it grows stronger, intuiton tells me this is right and ive just noticed that my coco earlies need to be repotted or they tend to fall over at times, anybody else noticed this?

i have never had any dealings with coco but i used to grow under cfls and small hps and noticed the same thing you speak off with the airy soil mixture i was using and i would let my seedlings get three to four sets of real leaves then bury to the first set of leaves when potting up out of solo cups the repotted plants always grew better and stronger than the ones i would originally pot up not burying them.

Been planting them deeper for awhile now.I do this even if they don't get weak.Normally I just add soil to the 20 oz. cup.Seems to work for me.When I pot up to 1gal.the dirt is at the same level as prior.Good luck with it.Forgot to add that my plants aren't falling over though.

sounds like weak light?

I'm not really sure what your saying, but stretchy stems is from high heat or low light levels

another trick to do if you have tall stems is to not fill the pot / cup so full, and then a week later fill it with coco thus burying the stem / supporting the plant and bringing the leaf set up to the media..

weak light. This is not a coir thing. Planting the seeds at 1" deep would help if it's not your light, but it's likely weak light.

I'll second the notion of planting the seeds 1" deep and more intense light

I don't think it has anything to do with the medium.

This hasn't been my experience at all.

I use a combination of 5000K to 6500k daylight CFL bulbs kept about 1 inch above. I also turn the lights on prior to the appearance of the plant. The ambient heat and light improves my time to above ground versus dark germination.

I would suggest using only daylight CFL bulbs and to keep them between 2cm and 4cm from the top of the coco/canopy. I turn the lights on 72 hours after planting the seeds (no paper towels, plastic bags, plates, cable boxes, or careful planting of a taproot required), and will have all the plants above ground 100 hours after planting seeds. Good luck!

you see im not completely sure what the light needs are, as the same amount of light in the past raised 3 1ft tall plants quite nicely, thanks for the tips. i think it might be that the orange light isnt what they want n maybe last time i used 6400ks, they luv it for the first few days but soon after i think they want blue up until late flower, im still learning. either way a simple 5 minute pot up fixes it all.

I don't use flouros any more, they are slow growers,T-12,that is.I use 400 watt CMH,HPS and a conversion bulb also.CMH and conversion for veg and CMH and or HPS for flower.

t-8s, t-12s, t-5s, who cares, there all on par with cfls, and hid lighting for seedlings is just a waste of power n heat, i think roots luv blue light, ive had plants in the past from seed under hps totally go to shit untill i added blue light, i think thats all my prob was , to much 2700k lighting. thx guys

I would have to disagree with that.I guess the Sun would be a waste of time then?Ya I would suggest using blue but Iv'e used HPS for seedlings and it worked very well.I respect the fact that you think it's a waste of money, but not to me it isn't.You can also use the heat to your advantage, winter.Safe groing
Ps not trying to mess up your thread, just my two cents. Also I don't think your soil has anything to do with stretch,as mentioned before weak light and or heat,I would agree with.

i knew someone would bring up the sun, cute but irrelavant, if im trying to mimic nature then fine but im not, just the results and facts are facts, seedling under adaquate light verses say sun is a huge differance in power, if one wants to hook up a 1000hps n get them 10,000 lumes per square foot that nature has over say a few 20 watt cfls per sqaure foot n get the same results if not even better then up them, im just trying to gain knowledge. seems like to me its mostly a blue light deficiency n not much else.

I had the same problems with seedlings getting weak stems and wilting over/dying, when sprouting with Coco. I found it was due to my water PH, in combination with not planting deep enough. I was watering straight out of the tap, which is 7.0. Once I started PH adjusting to 6.0, the problems decreased, and once I started planting deeper (1 - 1.5 inches) everything was fine.
