fungus gnats

A couple weeks ago I noticed a small fungus gnat infestation in my mother plant closet. A couple of spiders also had moved in. Instead of cleaning I decided to wait to see what happened. The spiders have been feasting on the fungus gnats so much there are none flying around. So save those spiders. LOL

Check your roots for root aphids. They take a winged form and are often mistaken for fungus gnats. They are satanic and destroy plants. So at any sign of gnat-like bugs in your room, check your roots. I found out I had them when a spider built a web at the end of one of the tubes in my aero system to catch them as a matter of fact. Spiders are beneficial bugs IMO.

Fungus nats will kind of not be bothered by you, but root aphids will try to get away from where you are. That's an easy way to tell. Either way kill em kill em all.

let your soil dry out then water the whole medium. After a few times of the soil drying out most of the eggs wont hatch and they will stop breeding.

If it gets bad i think spinosad will work.

I have a problem myself and after looking at several pictures and reading lots of info I'm 95% sure that i have fungus gnats.

I read on a gardening site that if you let the medium go dry and mix a solution of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 4 parts water and drench the plants it will kill eggs, larvae and parents while not harming your plants. Has anyone tried this? I might just try it on 1 plant to see the results but any input would be appreciated.

If you really have trouble, spray the top with spinosad right when you water. They're jumping around and die when they're hit.Keep doing this and eventually the spinosad leeches down and kills the larvae or whatever else is in there.I'm no entomologist but this is an organic way to be rid of them.In a case where you are not sure and may have root aphids use azamax as a soil drench and nothing will return and your plants will be lovely. The spinosad is probably the best way to go and it might even kill aphids.I kill 'em because it makes me feel like my rooms are not tight...:)

I am personally in the progress of ridding myself of fungus gnats. I got the little sticky pads for mosquitos and placed them on top of the medium, next to the plant. It's killing them all before they lay eggs. I have soil and hydro plants in my house so it's harder to drive them out with hydro but with soil I just water and up to the surface they come.

I tried drying out the soil but after the 8th day my tomatoes were really stressed. goodluck

a nematode drench will get rid of the gnats first time , look um up on the net , from sites that sell predators
