What effect does CalMag have on EC and pH?

Setting up my first grow in my new digs. Tried and true methods spread unhappiness throughout the garden. I'm guessing water. My old water was 0.5 EC. New water is less than 0.1 (thought my Truncheon was broken when it wouldn't blip a single blip) Missed the grow store but, plants needed help so I tried MgSO4 @ 5ml/gal and it worked but jumped my tubs EC from 0.8 to 1.8 (yoiks!)

Is CalMag used by the drop? Does it cause fluctuations in EC and pH? Clue me in.

do u have calmag+ from botanicare...? pretty sure that was appx 70ppm/0.1ec +/- @ 1ml per gal... and dropped the pH slightly... i used drops so just guessing by a tenth +/-. haven't used it in a while, but pretty sure that's about right... and was measured at the end of the mix, so think that might make a diff in the actual measurements...?

Hey FreezerBoy.

I recently moved as well and had to recalculate how I mix a few things.

Damn yer EC was 0.5EC at other house!!!! Dang that is HIGH!!!! Well to me it is.

Sounds like you have a well?

Water can flucuate from house to house due to whats in the ground. Florida is sitting a a huge limestone deposit. Water pH and ppm are very different than say New England which is sandy and rocky.

Best thing to do IMO is get a quality water test done. Might run you 200 bucks but well worth it. Will tell you exactly what is and what is not in your water.

Last house tap water was 50-70 ppm @ 6.3-6.4 pH......perfect water!!!!
New house is 50-100 ppm @ 5.5-5.8 pH......not as good as it was.

So my ppms are roughly the same....but pH is diff and I didn't move far. Must me different things in the water as the pH is much lower.

Argh....anywho...I'm ramblin now. LOL

CalMag from Botanicare......5ml/gallon. Will raise yer ppms a lil but not much.....may lower your pH slightly as well.

I mix Cal Mag before any other product to avoid nute fallout.

Good luck pal!

Thanks guys. Not on a well (town may be), just moved from a metropolis to a little town in the mountains. Lost every clone I took off the new batch, first losses in well over 10 years. Just gotta play with the new water till I figure it out.

Thanks again. I'll search out some Botanicare.

One gram of epsom (MgSO4) added to one gallon of water gives 25 ppm Mg and 33 ppm S. But for whatever reason it makes the EC jump faster than any other nute I use...so what you saw is not uncommon.

that's a suspiciously low EC for town water, the plumbing from the water tower to your home has gotta add more than that gotta, I'd be checking my truncheon. sounds like you did and all but...
I can't tell the difference between MagiCal and CalMag except in my wallet

cal mag will deff jump up your ec's i use at 1/2 tsp per gal all the way up to 3-4 week of flower unless heavy cal mag strains then i adjust alittle more...

There is zero difference between CalMag and MagiCal.......they are derived from the exact same sources and contain the exact same levels.

MagiCal is one dollar cheaper at my grow store......but I support AMERICAN companies so I snub my nose at all BC products.....plus I think Technaflora is crap.

My 2 grams worth :)
