Best way to remotely monitor outdoor spot?

Looking to set up some sort of security system on the patch. We dont have any power there so it has to run on batteries. Something that will feed live video or send a picture every hour or so..

Anyone have experience with this? Any ideas appreciated...Wondering if there is a smart phone app that would accomplish this possibly?

Thanks,

you should look into some sort of trail camera. you can strap it on a near by tree and set it to take as many pics whenever and also can do video. most just save photos on a memory card but there are some out there that can send pics/vids straight to your email. ive also heard of the trail cams that have a android app or something like that. sorry i dont got the brand names but it shouldnt be to hard to find em. id try the popular huntin web sites ;) i myself have one by my patch..every other water i check it. mine just save to the card but i take a digital camera with me and boom theres my pics. i mostly just get deer but im a bow hunter so i love it! sorry stoned ramble.o0 hope this helps!

i use trail cams... infared flashes are better than incandescent flash... and ones that have more sensitive triggers are better also... my delay settings go down to 15 seconds, and i would prefer em faster yet tbh

they average like $100 each...

Wally world has nice ones with an IR flash for about $120 in my neck of the woods. If it weren't so late in the season already I would most likely be investing in a system from Buckeye Cams: http://www.buckeyecam.com/ They seem to have the best technology and are setup for what we are discussing. The basic setup with one cam is going to run about $3k, with another 1k or so for each additional cam on site. Many of the cameras that use a cellular signal to transmit your picture will only upload them to a website and you will have to log in each time to check your recent pics. The Buckeye sends the photo directly to your email so you get the pic pushed right away to your phone. There is another brand new cam out there which uses GSM and all you have to do is drop in an activated sim card and it sends the pics where ever you would like, about $350 online only. Unfortunately this model does not yet have an IR flash which makes it useless to me. Maybe the next model will get the flash right.

In countries outside the US there seems to be a good number of 3g surveillance cameras available. 12v or 110. For some reason these don't appear to be legal to sell in America? They are *exactly* what you would want for your application and much more affordable then the buckeye.

I have been thinking about running a setup with a 3g data card, batteries, solar panel, a small laptop, router and wifi cams. Might save some money, but what a PITA. So much to do, so little time.

This year I have had some trouble with a repeat trespasser/vandal. I was unsure of how useful the pics would be in any given scenario but went ahead and setup a trail cam for peace of mind. Well last night the fucker came up, stole the fake $10 video cam I had at my gate, and I got shots of his vehicle coming and going with the real camera. Well worth the money. Just a quick background check on the net for a few more bucks and I soon know this guy better then his mom probably does. People really should make their facebook shit more private. Ha.

About the IR sensors: they are very sensitive in the middle of the day and take lots of empty pics as the wind and shadows kick around. It might not be fun getting 100 emails an hour to your phone of nothing between the hours of noon and 5pm. Mornings, evenings, and night seem to have no false alarms.

For about $20 you can get IR motion detectors. 4 AA batteries and they sound a 120 decibel alarm when motion is detected. Comes with a keyless remote so you can pass without the alarm sounding. Nothing to do with remote monitoring but might be useful to some. The sound of the alarm may be enough to scare off the intruder by itself, or at least get your attention if on the property.

Well, if you check the camera pics BEFORE you visit your plot, you might know if LEO visited the plot, didn't cut it down, so possibly put up a game camera of their own!

Sure you can just wear a handkerchief over your face when you visit the plot, but the drug task force has a nice budget so its no issue for them to purchase one of the top-end game cameras that would notify them immediately of your prescence.

Then they send the chopper with an IR camera and hunt your ass down in the woods with dogs too and you're fucked.

There are game cameras that send the photos back to your phone or computer - that might be a security issue in itself - but that would be handy.

There's a thread here somewhere about those kind, saw it a year or two ago.
